Hoosiers Set for FSC Game of the Week

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The two-time defending national champion Indiana men's soccer team will entertain the Penn State Nittany Lions on Friday, Sept. 30, as part of the Fox Soccer Channel (FSC) and National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) College Soccer Game of the Week. The match is slated for 7 p.m. CT on Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium.
The match up figures to be a good one, as the last five clashes between the two schools were decided by one goal or less. IU is 3-1-1 in its last five matches against the Nittany Lions with the lone tie coming in the Big Ten Tournament Championship match in 2003. Indiana claimed the title 4-1 on penalty kicks.
Over the past eight years, the Hoosiers are 12-3-1 on television, playing games on CSTV, ESPN, ESPN2, Fox Sports Net and CN8: The Comcast Net. The FSC Game of the Week match is one of three Hoosier events that are slated for television this season. IU also will be on ESPNU on Oct. 26 in South Bend, Ind., against Notre Dame. The Hoosiers' Oct. 30 tussle with Maryland will be shown on CN8: The Comcast Net.
The Indiana/Penn State match is the third College Soccer Game of the Week telecast. The 2004 game between the conference foes was broadcast on CN8: The Comcast Net, which IU won, 2-1, in Happy Valley.
"It is great," Indiana senior captain Brian Plotkin said of the College Soccer Game of the Week package. "We get to put college soccer on live television on a national level. It is great for the university and the soccer community. I think that having game on television provides a little bit more motivation toward wanting to play well, but I also think some of that can be attributed to that fact that a lot of our television games are some of the biggest games we play during the season."
Sean Wheelock, a veteran of Major League Soccer broadcasts and other MLS programming, including the MLS SuperDraft, will serve as the primary announcer for the match.
"The boys get excited when we have a game on television," Indiana head coach Mike Freitag said. "It usually means we are playing a good opponent, and the guys love to play in big games. We hope we can continue the trend of winning games we play on television. We have a lot of talented players in our program, and this gives them a chance to showcase those skills."
