Indiana to Host Hoosier Classic

BLOOMINTON, Ind. -The Indiana women's tennis team continues fall play with the Hoosier Classic. The Hoosier Classic will feature five ITA preseason ranked competitors including Indiana's No. 82 Sarah Batty and No. 90 Dora Vastag. Participating in this year's Classic are Indiana, Kansas, Kansas State, LSU, Murray State and Notre Dame.
This year's Hoosier Classic will be comprised of five flights (A-E) for singles competition. Each flight is a draw eight. The main doubles bracket is a draw 16 with additional round robin matches each day.
Results will be available at the conclusion of the day on IUHOOSIERS.com.
Scouting the Week
The Indiana's women's tennis team is set to face some tough competition at this year's Hoosier Classic. Of the six team participating in this year's Classic, five competitors are ranked in the ITA's preseason singles rankings. Notre Dame's Catrina Thompson is the highest ranked player in this year's Classic at No. 27, followed behind teammate Brook Buck at No. 54. Indiana's Sarah Batty (No. 82) and Dora Vastag (No. 90) are also ranked in the ITA's preseason rankings. Finally, Kansas State's Tamar Kvaratskhelia is ranked No. 95.
Additionally, four of the six participating schools were ranked in the top 100 of last season's ITA final team poll (Notre Dame-24, Indiana-36, LSU-44, Kansas State-71). In the 2004's final regional rankings, Indiana is third, only behind Notre Dame and Northwestern. In the Southwest rankings, LSU finished fourth, while Kansas ended in the 10th position, two in front of Kansas State in the Central regional rankings.
Bronco Invitational Recap
The Hoosiers had a solid debut at the Bronco Invitational last weekend. Highlighting the weekend's play were impressive results from Indiana's four newcomers (Alba Berdala, Marah Calvo, Sigrid Fischer, Stephanie Heller). Despite not taking IU's three top returners, the Hoosiers complied 12 singles victories and five doubles wins, including freshman Alba Berdala taking home the singles Flight "A" crown.
2004 Hoosier Classic Recap
Last year's Hoosier Classic saw solid competition from several 2005 returnees. In singles play, Dora Vastag, who competed in Flight A, Laura McGaffigan, who played in Flight B, and Cecile Perton, who competed in Flight C all advanced to the finals of their respective brackets before dropping tough matches and taking home runner-up honors. IU had a similar outcome in doubles when Kara Zeder and McGaffigan fell short in the finals of the doubles pool to a talented pair from LSU.
Three Hoosiers to All-American Championship
Senior Dora Vastag will join teammates Sarah Batty and Laura McGaffigan at the prestigious Riviera/ITA All-American Tournament in Pacific Palisades, Calif., Oct. 6-9. Vastag, who originally was an alternate, will join Batty in the qualifying singles draw.
Batty and McGaffigan head to the All-American Tournament in the main doubles draw. The pair captured the ITA Summer National Doubles crown in mid-August on its home court at the Outdoor Varsity Tennis Center in Bloomington to give them the automatic bid to the tournament.
Hoosiers Earn Preseason Ranking
In the preseason ITA rankings, three Hoosiers can be found in the top 100. Coming off a 19-11 singles season, Sarah Batty is ranked No. 82 in the preseason poll. Senior Dora Vastag, who competed in the No. 1 singles slot for Indiana last season, earned a ranking of No. 90. IU, who is consistently strong in doubles, placed another pair in the top 20 of the preseason ranks. Batty and junior Laura McGaffigan, who won the ITA Summer National Doubles Championship in Bloomington, earned a preseason ranking of No. 19. Batty is a 2003-04 All-American in doubles.
Loring Closes in on 300 Big Ten Wins
This spring, head coach Lin Loring, who is in his 29th season at IU, looks to notch his 300 career Big Ten win. Currently, Loring holds a 296-60 record in conference play. Loring is the winningest coach in NCAA women's tennis history.
Indiana Welcomes Four New Faces
Joining the already impressive Hoosier are four talented newcomers who are expected to make significant contributions in 2005-06. Indiana welcomes Alba Berdala, Marah Calvo, Sigrid Fischer and Stephanie Heller. Berdala, who has already demonstrated she belongs in the Cream and Crimson, is currently ranked No. 50 in the Spanish women's rankings. Calvo, who has attended the Evert Academy in Florida the past two years, earned an impressive No. 245 ITF rankings prior to becoming a Hoosier. Fischer comes to Bloomington as the No. 168 ranked player in the German women's tennis rankings. Heller, the Northbrook, Ill., native, was the Illinois state doubles champion in 2004 and named second team All-State in singles in 2002 and 2003. Along with a strong group of returners, the 2005-06 Hoosiers are expected to be on top of the Big Ten once again.
