Indiana Ready For Iowa State

BLOOMINGTON, IND. - The Indiana women's soccer team will wrap up its Big 12 Challenge weekend with a trip to Ames, Iowa, to face Iowa State on Sunday, Sept. 4, at 12:30 p.m. The Hoosiers (0-2-1) are coming off a solid performance against Missouri that saw junior midfielder Carrie DeFreece get into the action with multiple shots in the 2-0 loss.
"We are remaining confident as a team," head coach Mick Lyon said. "We are doing everything right on offense, but have yet to see everything click at the same time. I have told the team, once we get everything working on all fronts, the goals will just come as a result."
Iowa State (1-1-1) is coming off a shutout win over fellow Big Ten team Purdue in the first of two Big Ten/Big 12 Challenge matches. Iowa State ended its scoring drought as sophomore Stephanie Kaphingst netted her and the team's first goal of the season hitting the top of the net in the 77th minute.
Action gets under way for the Hoosiers this Sunday at 12:30 p.m., at the ISU Soccer Complex.
•HEAD COACH Mick Lyon PREVIEW•
"We have never faced Iowa State and do not know a lot about them," head coach Mick Lyon said. "With that said, we know they are a typical Big 12 team, big and physical. It is our plan to use our speed to create mismatches against them, which hopefully will turn into success in the result of goals. We will definitely go out and give it our best effort."
•LAST TIME OUT•
The Hoosiers fell to its first of two Big 12 challengers, Missouri (1-1-1), by a score of 2-0 at Walton Stadium in Columbia, Mo.
Senior Stacey Von Boxmeer held her own in goal making four tremendous saves on the night. One of her more notable stops came as she ran to the top of the box to make a save on Missouri's Amber Swinehart's breakaway chance.
IU junior midfielder Carrie DeFreece featured the Hoosiers' best scoring opportunity of the night in the 30th minute. DeFreece found her way through the Tiger defense and eluded Missouri's keeper Laura Buehrig on the shot, but unfortunately caught the cross bar. DeFreece recovered to fire a second-chance attempt that found its way to the hands of Buehrig for the save, preserving the 0-0 score.
Missouri's Jennifer Nobis notched Missouri's second goal and collected an assist after junior Aria Hudetz found the back of the net for the Tigers' first strike at net.
•SCOUTING IOWA STATE•
The Hoosiers have never faced off against the Cyclones since beginning the program in 1993. Iowa State comes into the match with a 1-1-1 record after tying Mississippi State, 0-0, after two sudden-death overtimes, before dropping a 2-0 decision to Ole Miss. The last time on field, the Cyclones shutout Purdue 1-0 for its first win and goal of the season.
•FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING•
This will be the first time that that the Hoosiers have faced off against Iowa State. Iowa State is only the second team from the Big 12 that the Hoosiers have ever faced. The familiar Big 12 opponent is Missouri, who IU has faced four times including its 2-0 loss on Friday night.
•2005 SEASON PREVIEW•
The Hoosiers continue to rely on their defensive ability to stop opposing teams. The 2004 team again set a record for the least number of goals allowed by opponents with 18, which ranked second in the Big Ten. Every year, head coach Mick Lyon's Hoosiers have set a record for fewest goals allowed since he took the job three years ago.
With past years seeing a squad that was bottom heavy with underclassmen and inexperience, this year's team is full of experience in not only Big Ten matches, but international and club contests as well. This year's team has four seniors, five juniors, nine sophomores and 10 freshmen.
•HOME SWEET HOME•
After back-to-back trips west, the Hoosiers will return home for the Hoosier Classic on Sept.9-11, facing Miami and Xavier on Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium.
