Three Hoosiers Advance to Finals of Hoosier Classic

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's tennis team had a solid first day of singles play at the Hoosier Classic. Making their 2005-06 debut, senior Sarah Batty, junior Laura McGaffigan and sophomore Brianna Williams advanced to the finals of their respective brackets. All three Hoosiers will face players from Notre Dame in the finals of their brackets tomorrow afternoon. Doubles competition gets under way tomorrow at 10 a.m. on the Outdoor Varsity Tennis Courts.
"Our veteran players really played well today," Indiana head coach Lin Loring said. "We're in the finals of three flights which means we played some good tennis."
Batty, who opened the 2005-06 campaign with two convincing victories, won her first match over Elizavet Avdeeva from Kansas, 6-2, 6-1 before defeating LSU's Mykala Hedberg, 6-2, 6-1. She will face No. 54 Brook Buck from Notre Dame in the finals of the Flight A singles draw.
McGaffigan won both of her day's matches in the Flight B bracket advancing her to the finals as well. McGaffigan topped Christine Skoda of Kansas, 6-1, 6-2 before knocking off No. 95 Tamar Kvaratskhelia of Kansas State, 2-6, 6-3, 1-0(8). McGaffigan will take on Notre Dame's Katie Potts for the crown. Freshman Alba Berdala, who also competed in the Flight B bracket today, won her first match over LSU's Lauren Seaman, 6-2, 6-1 but dropped the second match, 6-7, 6-1, 1-0(6).
Williams advanced to the finals of the Flight C draw by beating Notre Dame's Lauren Connelly, 6-2, 4-6, 1-0(6) before winning 6-2, 6-2 over Murray State's Rachael Lask. Williams will face Notre Dame's Kelcy Tefft in the finals.
