IU Takes on Pacific in Home Opener

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - After a four-game road trip with Appalachian State and Wake Forest, the Hoosier field hockey team returns to Bloomington for its home opener against the 2004 NorPac Champion, the Pacific Tigers.
The Hoosiers are coming off a 1-0 win over Appalachian State. In Boone, senior captain Lesley Wiler scored the game's only goal off an assist from junior Morgan Miller and sophomore Amanda Oyler. IU outshot the Tigers 26-3 with 14 of those shots on goal. Indiana also had the advantage in penalty corners. The Hoosiers totaled 10 corners to ASU's 2. Indiana goalkeeper Haley Exner tallied one save in the win.
The Hoosiers then made their way to Winston-Salem to take on the three-time defending national champion Wake Forest Demon Deacons. With IU down 3-0 at the half, the Hoosiers hung tough and raised the score to 3-2. Scoring for IU was Wiler off an assist from sophomore Frederique Meeuwsen and Miller off a penalty corner. Meeuwsen and sophomore Meredith Brown had the assists on Indiana's second goal. Despite 11 saves from Exner and a strong second half, the Demon Deacons took the 4-2 win.
IU will face Pacific in the two teams' first ever meeting. Pacific is one of three new additions to the Hoosiers' schedule in 2005.
Coach's Corner
"Pacific was in the NCAA Tournament last year and they are a good team," head coach Amy Robertson said. "We wanted to get them on the schedule this year. It's also good to play team from other regions of the country. It's great to be home finally. It's also nice to only have one game to focus on this week. Going into this game, we have some great momentum and we know that it will be a good game."
Scouting the Tigers
Pacific is coming off of an 11-10 season including being crowned the NorPac Conference champion. The Tigers return six starters including juniors Vianney Campos, who registered 14 goals last season, and Michelle Manson who accounted for two goals, two assists and one defensive save.
Leading the Tigers in 2005 is junior Jennifer Chaney who has recorded eight points (two goals, four assists). Chaney has taken a team-high five shots on goal as well. Campos and Natalie Purcell have also notched two goals a piece for Pacific this season. Goalkeeper Valerie Niles has recorded 26 saves as of Sept. 5 for the Tigers.
So far in 2005, the Tigers suffered a 3-2 overtime loss to Delaware in overtime despite NorPac Player of the Week Campos' two goals. In Pacific's second game against Miami (Ohio), the Tigers posted their first shutout 2-0 win of the season. On Sept. 2 Pacific took on Syracuse and were victorious again, and Chaney tallied two goals. The following day the Tigers took another set-back with a 2-0 loss to Big Ten opponent, Michigan State. Against Iowa Pacific was thumped 8-1. The Tigers will face Louisville before heading to Bloomington to square off against the Hoosiers.
Hoosiers at Top of Big Ten Standings
The Indiana team can be found at or near the top in several categories in Big Ten standings.
As of Sept. 5, the Hoosiers lead the Big Ten in shots with 79, nearly 20 more than the following team. Additionally, Indiana is the team Big Ten leader assists with 10.
Junior Lydia Schrott finds herself at the top of three categories as well. Shrott leads the Big Ten in points with eight, goals with four and goals per game with four.
Wiler and Frederique Meeuwsen share the leader slot in assists with two a piece.
Bashore Named to USA National Team
Kayla Bashore and Wiler share second in the standings in shots with 12. Additionally, Wiler sits in fourth in points per game with six.
For the first time in program history, a member of the Indiana field hockey team has been named to the USA National Field Hockey Team.
Senior Kayla Bashore has been added to the USA Women's National Team roster. Bashore, who has tallied two points off one goal for the Hoosiers in 2005, played with the USA team in their five-game series against Canada. Along with starting for the Hoosiers, Bashore played with the National Team in Virginia Beach, Va. on Aug. 29 and started in the 1-1 tie on Aug. 31.
Robertson Hits Benchmark
The Hoosiers 1-0 win over Appalachian State on Sept. 2, head coach Amy Robertson has been a part of 200 wins as a coach. Between her times as an assistant at Iowa, UMass, Wake Forest and as a head coach at Indiana, Robertson has complied a 200-120 career record.
