BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's soccer team is set to host the inaugural Hoosier Classic Sept. 9-11, on Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium, in Bloomington, Ind. The Hoosiers (1-2-1) will welcome Miami (3-1) for a match on Friday, Sept. 9, at 7 p.m., followed by a contest with Xavier (2-2) on Sept. 11, at 1 p.m. Also making the trip will be No. 18 Marquette, who will face Xavier on Sept. 9 at 5 p.m., followed by a match against Miami on Sept. 11, at 11 a.m.
While IU will face Marquette, the field proves to be tough with Miami and Xavier bringing in a combined record of 5-3. The Hoosiers will open their homes season this weekend against familiar foes, having faced Miami on three previous occasions and Xavier in nine of the last 12 years.
"We are excited for the chance to host the inaugural Hoosier Classic," head coach Mick Lyon said. "We anticipate a great weekend of soccer that, combined with the IU football game on Saturday, to make a full schedule for IU fans. This should be a great weekend for IU athletics, all to be capped off with IU victories."
•HEAD COACH Mick Lyon PREVIEW•
"Miami is coming off a stellar performance against highly-ranked Princeton," head coach Mick Lyon said. "They were able to pull out a win at home against a Princeton squad that is highly talented, which will give them high spirits coming into our tournament. Being an ACC team, I expect them to make the match a tremendous battle. We played them a couple of years ago, and it was a highly contested match, and I expect the same from them this weekend. We feel good as a team, and are fired up to play more and better soccer. Overall, I think our team matches up well against their lineup, and look to see us come out strong on Friday."
•LAST TIME OUT•
The Indiana women's soccer team came away with a couple of firsts in its 1-0 win on the road in Ames, Iowa, against Iowa State on Sunday afternoon. At the ISU Soccer Complex, freshmen Molly Beckwith and Molly Kruger showed why they are newcomers to watch this season as they teamed up for IU's first goal and win of the season.
The Hoosiers' goal came at the 37th minute, with Beckwith breaking toward the goal and receiving the dish from Kruger to cap off the play.
Multiple Hoosiers were a part of the aggressive effort that saw Indiana out-shoot the Cyclones 13 to 4 on the day. Registering shots in the highly competitive performance were seniors Kristen Zmijewski (1) and Robin Barker (1), juniors Ali Brown (1), Carrie DeFreece (2 on goal) and Megan Pipkens (1), and sophomores Lauren Lamping (1 on goal), Beverly Markwort (1) and Lindsay McCarthy (1).
Beckwith finished the match with two shots and one goal on the day, while fellow midfielder Kruger fired off two shots, one on goal, and one assist in the win.
The stats sheet also favored the Hoosiers with five corner kicks to just two for the Cyclones.
The victory could not have happened without the performance of IU's backs, who held the Cyclones to only four shots on the afternoon.
ISU, a team which scored one goal against Purdue off 19 shots in its previous match, only came close to finding the Hoosier net twice during the course of 90 minutes. The defensive stand was highlighted by the core defense of Markwort, Barker, senior Courtney O'Bryan and Lamping.
In her first start, Fabbro manned all 90 minutes of the contest in goal. For the Cyclones, sophomore Joanna Haig took the goalie responsibilities, racking up four saves and allowing the eventual game-winning goal.
•SCOUTING MIAMI•
This will be the second time the Hoosiers have faced the Hurricanes in the last three years. The last and only other meeting between the two squads was in 2003 in Boca Raton, Fla., where Indiana fell to Miami, 1-0, in the Florida Atlantic Invitational.
The Hurricanes are coming off a stellar defensive effort against No. 14 Princeton, limiting the Tigers to seven shots the entire match. The defense helped setup the upset, as freshman Rachel Rigamat notched a pair of goals, while Paulelette Ricks-Chambers also tallied a goal in the 3-0 victory over the Tigers. The win marked the first for Miami over a ranked opponent since 2003.
•FAMILIAR CROWD•
Indiana is no stranger to its opponents this coming week, a story that has not been true in its first four matchups of 2005. Indiana had only faced one of its first four opponents prior to the 2005 campaign (Missouri). It was the first time IU faced Loyola Marymount, Southern California and Iowa State, while it has taken on Missouri on three other occasions.
At the Hoosier Classic, IU will experience more familiar territory, having faced both opponents a combined nine times. Indiana owns a combined 5-4 record over its two opponents coming into this weekend's matchups.
•HOME SWEET HOME•
The Hoosiers are 9-2-1 in home openers. The Hoosiers have opened their home season against Xavier four times, with this year being the second time the Hoosiers welcome Miami for their Bloomington debut.
This year's schedule is tied for the second-most games played on the road before the Hoosiers were able to run atop their home field. In 2003, the Hoosiers had their longest road stretch of seven games before opening up Armstrong Stadium's gates to host Ohio State. The last time the Hoosiers had four road games before returning for their first home game was in 1999, when the Hoosiers tied Saint Louis, 1-1.
•GOOD GOLLY MISS MOLLY•
It was the freshmen duo of Molly Beckwith and Molly Kruger who teamed up together to notch the Hoosiers' first goal of the season. The feat came in the 37th minute of action against the Iowa State Cyclones, as Beckwith moved toward the goal, collecting a dish from Kruger to knock the ball in for Beckwith and Kruger's first collegiate goal and assist, respectively. IU, which had gone scoreless in its first four contests, could not be denied in its offensive domination of Iowa State, posting a 13 shots to four advantage.
•WHO'S THAT SEIB•
Freshman Ashley Seib has made an immediate impact on the stats sheet, posting two shots, each of which were on goal in her first two collegiate matches. While the freshman has yet to start in the Hoosier lineup, her play off the bench has made her a deadly threat at forward.
While coming off the bench for the Hoosiers, the Evansville, Ind., native has wasted no time in creating a problem for the opposing defense in her 66 minutes of play. While the freshman has no goals to her name, her quick moves and tenacity toward the game makes it only a matter of time before the net sees a ball off the freshman's feet.
•SHUTTING OUT THE COMPETITION•
The Hoosiers have twice shut out an opponent in the 2005 campaign, the first coming in a 0-0 tie against Loyola Marymount in the season opener, followed by the most recent against Iowa State in a 1-0 victory.
•GOING THE DISTANCE•
Junior Lauren Lamping and sophomore Beverly Markwort have seen a substantial amount of playing time in the early goings of 2005. Lamping has recorded 285, while Markwort is close behind with 281 out of a possible 290.
The two, along with senior Robin Barker (272), sophomore Jenna Babcock (200) and senior Courtney O'Bryan (135) make up a defensive corps that has shut out two opponents, and limited Iowa State in their last match to just four shots on the contest. This is the same Cyclone squad that used 19 shots and one goal to defeat Purdue just two days before their meeting with the Hoosiers.
•ON TARGET WITH DEFREECE•
The junior midfielder, Carrie DeFreece, from Olathe, Kan., leads the Hoosiers with three shots on goal, four overall shots in her first four games of the season. Speedy DeFreece, her nickname on the field, was a strong contributor in the Hoosiers' last match against the Cyclones, posting two shots on goal to help keep Iowa State on its heels the entire match.
