BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's soccer team, led by Kristen Zmijewski, with a goal, and Suzie Teixeira and Molly Beckwith on the assist, fell to Miami (4-1), 2-1, on Friday night on Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium. The Hoosiers (1-3-1) kept the Hurricane on the defensive most of the night, dominating from the ground with a 15 to 9 shot advantage.
"We played a aggressive and physical game, but in the end were unable to turn the chances into goals," head coach Mick Lyon said. "I am disappointed with the results of the match, but can not overlook the fact that we have a good group of women who play with a lot of effort. Some teams cannot say that, but I am happy with the moral character this team has shown. We will learn from this game and take that with us into Sunday's match."
The Hurricane struck first to take the lead off a goal from junior midfielder Kristen Chapman. Miami capitalized off a corner kick at the 34:32 mark, which bounced around the Indiana box before Chapman found the right side of the Hoosier net.
Indiana's best chance at finding the net in the first half came off a pass from sophomore midfielder Katy Stewart to freshman forward Beckwith. Beckwith, a Worthington, Ohio, native, passed her defender and had the goalie guessing the other direction before her shot found the right post for a deflection.
Miami's goalie, sophomore Lauren McAdam tallied seven saves on the night, while on Beckwith's play recovered to pull in the rebound off the goalpost.
Scoring the equalizer for the Hoosiers was senior midfielder Zmijewski in the second period. The goal, setup off a throw-in from the left side of the field from Beckwith to the box, was deflected off the foot of sophomore forward Teixeira right into the striking zone of Zmijewski who footed in IU's first goal of the night. The tying goal came at the 71st minute.
"Playing at home gave us that extra energy to play well in front of our fans," Zmijewski said. "We played great as a team tonight. We were looking for each other out on the field and the midfielders were finding the passes. We just came up short in the end."
The Hoosiers fired off eight shots on goal and led the Hurricane in shots at the half, eight to three. Unfortunately, finding the net for the final time in the game would be the feet of Miami.
The game winning goal from Miami freshman forward Tessa Lennala came at the 82nd minute of action. Lennala footed the goal into the middle of the net off a deflection from Hoosier goalie Stacey Van Boxmeer, who stopped a 27-yard blast from freshman midfielder Rachael Rigamat in the previous shot.
In goal for the Hoosiers, Van Boxmeer tallied five saves in the performance.
The Hoosiers will conclude the inaugural Hoosier Classic Sunday, Sept. 11, taking on Xavier (2-3), who is also coming off a 2-1 defeat at the hands of No. 18 Marquette is the first match of the Classic.
