Short to Attend USA Volleyball National Team Tryout

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Freshman outside hitter Erica Short will attend the USA Volleyball Women's National Team tryout from Jan. 13-15, at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
"This opportunity for Erica to go out to the Olympic Training Center and try out with other great student-athletes will be very beneficial," Indiana head coach Katie Weismiller said. "Anytime you have the chance to train with the best players in the country, it is a great opportunity. We believe Erica has the potential to be one of the best in the country, and this will give her a great opportunity to see where she is at this point in her career."
In her initial season as a Hoosier, Short eclipsed Indiana's single-season freshman kill mark against Purdue on Nov. 19. She finished the season with 398 putaways. Additionally, Short garnered all-tournament at both the Winthrop and TIS Bookstore Invitationals. Furthermore, she registered career highs in kills (27) attacks (49) and total blocks (7) against Dayton on Sept. 17. In sum, Short posted 23 double-digit kill performances and strung together 10 consecutive matches with double-digit kills.
Team USA, under the guidance of first-year head coach "Jenny" Lang Ping, finished the 2005 season with a record of 26-15 by winning 15 of its final 17 matches. The Americans, ranked No. 5 in the world, earned medals in each of their last three events: gold at the FIVB World Championship Qualification Tournament in August and at the NORCECA Continental Championship in September, and silver at the FIVB World Grand Champions Cup in November.
