Hoosiers Open 2006 Ranked No. 32

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The 2006 Indiana women's tennis team will open its 2006 season ranked in the top 50 of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) rankings. As a team, IU is ranked No. 32 as announced by the ITA on Jan. 10. Additionally, two Hoosiers picked up singles rankings and a doubles pair earned a top-50 nod as well.
"The preseason ranking are nice recognition for our players, but they are just that, preseason," Indiana head coach Lin Loring said. "The rankings are on a computer and don't get really accurate until the middle of March. So it's a good start but we know they will change a lot every month of the season."
Senior captain Sarah Batty kicks off her final campaign as a Hoosier with a No. 98 ranking. The Chesterfield, England native won six singles matches in the fall, including a victory over a ranked opponent and a trip to the ITA All-American Tournament.
Junior Laura McGaffigan earned her first national ranking at the No. 100 slot. McGaffigan recorded five singles wins in the fall. McGaffigan faced two ranked competitors and was victorious in both matches.
In doubles, Batty and McGaffigan earned a No. 37 ranking. The Hoosier duo claimed the ITA Summer National Championship, ensuring a trip to the prestigious All-American Tournament. For the fall, the pair collected a team-high seven wins and faced some of the nation's toughest opponents.
The Hoosiers open the spring slate with a pair of home matches on Sunday, Jan. 15. IU will face Miami (Ohio) at 9:30 a.m. before taking on Western Michigan at 2:30 p.m. The match will be held in the Varsity Tennis Center.
