BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana head coach Ray Looze and the Indiana University swimming and diving program announced the signing of Tyler McGowan (Vincennes, Ind./Lincoln). He joins Kevin Happ (Hunting Valley, Ohio/University School), Christopher Head (Evansville, Ind./North), Chris Oleksiak (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove), Jensen Ried (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Springs) and Drew Sease (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) as part of the incoming class of 2006.
"Tyler is a guy with a lot of potential," Looze said. "He swam for several years with Coach Donny Brush in the Evansville area. With that intimate knowledge, Coach Brush really had the most to do with Tyler coming here from a coaching standpoint. We are looking forward to him contributing in short order to our Big Ten team."
A three-time state qualifier, McGowan has claimed five sectional titles during his prep career. He captured the 200 IM and 500 free crowns in 2003 and 2005, while picking up the 500 free title in 2004. Moreover, McGowan snared the Big 8 title in the 200 IM and 500 free in 2003 and 2004. Meanwhile, McGowan earned the Kiwanis Most Valuable Swimmer award this past season. Furthermore, McGowan currently holds school records in the 200 IM, 500 free, 200 medley, 200 free and 400 free relays.
On the club circuit, McGowan swam with the Newburgh Sea Creatures. The team won the age group championship in 2001. During that time, McGowan seized the state championship in the 50 and 100 back in 2000 and the 1,650 free in 2002.
"I chose Indiana because I hope to be accepted into the Kelley School of Business as well as swim for a Big Ten school," McGowan said. "I also was impressed with the coaching staff and the facilities."
Away from the pool, the son of Sandy and Allan McGowan earned a spot in the National Art Honor Society. He also garnered National Honor Roll, National Honor Society and Who's Who Among American High School Students recognition.
The Hoosiers anticipate announcing more signees in the weeks to come. Keep an eye on IUHOOSIERS.com for any developments.
