Valentin Earns IU Athlete of the Week

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - On a weekly basis, IUHOOSIERS.com will recognize the top performances in Hoosier Athletics by selecting an IU Athlete of the Week. For the week ending Jan. 15, senior guard Cyndi Valentin earned the honor. She is the second women's basketball player to be recognized for the award this year, as senior forward Jenny DeMuth earned it for the week of Dec. 11 and Jan. 3.
Valentin made history on Thursday, Jan. 12 against Northwestern when she broke the NCAA Division I record for consecutive free throws made in a season with 61. Valentin topped the previous record of 60 set by Ginny Doyle of Richmond during the 1992 season. Valentin also tied the single-season NCAA record for all divisions at 61 set by Valerie Kepner of Baldwin-Wallace from 1998-89. On the night, Valentin went 2-of-4 from the charity stripe and ended her streak at 61.
"I am really proud of Cyndi," head coach Sharon Versyp said. " It's a great statistic for her to have. With her contributing so well, that is just a big key to our success right now. She just has to continue to do that for her teammates and inspire them to do the same."
In addition to her record-breaking performance, Valentin led the Hoosiers in scoring with a game-high 19 points against the Wildcats. The Bloomington, Ind., native also recorded seven rebounds and five steals in the 69-56 win.
Valentin earned the IU Athlete of the Week honor from a list of deserving nominees. The list included senior Brady Richardson (wrestling), junior Stacey Clausing (women's track and field), senior Marco Killingsworth (men's basketball), and junior Lindsay Weigle (women's diving).
Hoosier Honor Roll
Senior Brady Richardson (wrestling):
Richardson went 4-0 at the Virginia Duals to lead the 15th-ranked Indiana wrestling team to its second team title of the season at the Virginia Duals in Norfolk, Va. Richardson posted bonus-point victories in all four of his matches, claiming falls against Jess Hasseman (Bloomsburg) and Jack Sullivan (Penn) and technical falls victories against Matt Wood (Virginia Tech) and Lloyd Rogers (Chattanooga).
Junior Stacey Clausing (women's track and field):
At Jan. 14th's Hoosier Classic, Clausing led the Hoosiers with a first-place finish in the 400m. Clausing's time of 54.87 surpassed her previous personal best mark (55.15) in the 400m set on Jan. 22, 2005. More impressively, Clausing crossed the line nearly four seconds faster than the second and third-place finishers. Additionally, Clausing was a part of the Indiana A women's 4x400m relay team that registered an event-best time of 3:52.10.
Senior Marco Killingsworth (men's basketball):
Killingsworth led the Hoosiers with 27 points on 13-of-22 from the field at No. 14/15 Michigan State on Jan. 11. It marked the seventh time this season Killingsworth has amassed 20 or more points in a contest and the eighth time he has led IU in scoring.
Junior Lindsay Weigle (women's diving):
Weigle helped IU to a 39-18 triumph over UCLA in a two-day diving dual meet from Jan. 13-14 in Bloomington, Ind. On Jan. 13, she eclipsed the school record in the three-meter with an amazing performance in the discipline to tally 357.75 points. The Bloomington, Ind., product nailed all six dives on her list to post a 357.75. That effort surpassed the previous standard of 354.00 set by teammate Loukas on Jan. 29, 2005. On Jan. 14. she claimed her second title in as many days with a solid 304.75 outing on the platform.
