BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - On a weekly basis, IUHOOSIERS.com will recognize the top academic performances by Hoosier student-athletes with the IU Scholar-Athlete of the Week Award. For the week ending Sept. 4, freshman football player Jammie Kirlew earned the first honor as selected by IU Athletics' Academic Services.
"He is a great young man," Indiana head football coach Terry Hoeppner said after learning of the recognition. "We were talking about him today. He is a great young man. Congratulations to him on that award."
Kirlew took to the collegiate ranks with a passion as he opened up school on the right foot. Not only did the Orlando, Fla., product begin utilizing tutors during the first week, he e-mailed his professors over the summer to find out his books so that he could get a head start on reading them.
"He is definitely an academic leader for his classmates," academic advisor Jenn Townsend said. "He also is someone who is a shining example of how to do the right things at the beginning of his academic career."
