Dubuque Tabbed IU Athlete of the Week

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - On a weekly basis, IUHOOSIERS.com will recognize the top performances in Hoosier Athletics by selecting an IU Athlete of the Week. For the week ending Jan. 22, senior wrestler Joe Dubuque grabbed the distinction. Dubuque is the third IU grappler to win the weekly honor. Sophomore All-American Brandon Becker garnered the accolade for the week ending Nov. 27 and sophomore Marc Bennett claimed the award for the week ending Dec. 18.
Top-ranked Dubuque has helped lead the Hoosiers to a perfect 2-0 start in Big Ten action. The defending 125-pound national champion led the Hoosiers over Ohio State, 31-7, on Jan. 20 before downing Purdue, 24-14, on Jan. 22.
In the Hoosiers' win over Purdue, Dubuque claimed his 100th career victory with a 10-3 decision over Brandon Tucker. Dubuque became the 12th Hoosier to accomplish the feat. The Indiana wrestling team also is off to a perfect 11-0 start to the season. IU's start to the season is the best since the 1995-96 season when it opened with 12 wins.
Dubuque has claimed All-America honors the last two seasons (2003-8th, 2004-1st), has won three titles (2003-Northern Iowa Open Champion, 2004-NCAA 125-pound Champion, 2005-Mat Town 125-pound Champion) and has pinned a total of 20 opponents.
On the year, Dubuque has posted six falls, one major decision, tallied 52 dual points, holds a 10-0 dual record and moved to a perfect 14-0 overall on the season.
Dubuque earned the IU Athlete of the Week honor and is recognized along with junior Stacey Clausing (women's track and field), senior Ryan Fagan (men's diving), sophomore Ben Hesen (men's swimming), senior Dmytro Ishtuganov (men's tennis), senior Ryan Ketchum (men's track and field), sophomore Christina Loukas (women's diving), senior forward Marco Killingsworth (men's basketball), senior guard Cyndi Valentin (women's basketball), Leila Vaziri (women's swimming) and Brianna Williams (women's tennis) in this week's Hoosier honor roll.

Junior Stacey Clausing (women's track and field):
Clausing claimed an impressive three titles, met one NCAA provisional standard and recorded two new personal bests at Jan. 21's Indiana Invitational against Big Ten foes Ohio State and Purdue. The St. Mary's, Ohio product took first place in the 200m with a personal-best time of 24.12. In the 400m, Clausing met the NCAA's provisional standard (54.40) in the event with a personal-best 54.31, nearly a second faster than her previous mark set at last year's meet against Purdue and Ohio State. Clausing is the first Hoosier to nab an NCAA provisional standard this season. In the women's 4x400m, Clausing and teammates claimed their third straight title in the event, ousting Ohio State in the event by a second en route to the team's second-place finish.
Senior Ryan Fagan (men's diving):
Fagan etched his name into IU Diving's illustrious record book as he eclipsed a 16-year-old school standard previously held by Olympic gold medalist Mark Lenzi. The Pittsburgh, Pa., native broke the standard in the three-meter with an eye-popping 399.30. Lenzi set the previous record with a 397.65 in East Lansing, Mich., on Feb. 9, 1990. In the one-meter event, Fagan began what would become an incredibly dominant evening. He blew away the field with a 321.22 to win the title.
Sophomore Ben Hesen (men's swimming):
Hesen helped the No. 10 Hoosiers to a 160-137 triumph over No. 17 Kentucky in Lexington on Jan. 20. In the opening event of the evening, Hesen ledoff as the Hoosier quartet sprinted to the finish in a B-cut time of 1:29.19 in the 200-yard medley relay. That effort also stands as the 10th-fastest in school history in the event. His four wins are also the most for the Hoosiers this season in a dual-meet setting.
Senior Dmytro Ishtuganov (men's tennis):
Ishtuganov led the Indiana men's tennis team to a season-opening doubleheader sweep on Jan. 21. Ishtuganov went a perfect 2-0 at the No. 1 singles position and added a win at No. 1 doubles against Bradley in the victories. IU defeated Butler, 5-2, and Bradley, 7-0.
Against Butler, Ishtuganov fell behind as he dropped the first set to James Low, 7-5. The Keiv, Ukraine native rebounded claiming the final two sets, 6-4, 6-2. IU went on to claim the 5-2 win. In second match against Bradley, in both doubles and singles, Ishtuganov was the first off the court. In doubles, he teamed with sophomore Dara McLoughlin for the first time and rolled to an 8-4 win at the No. 1 position. He then made short work of 2005 All-Missouri Valley Conference players and the league's 2004 Player of the Year Marko Marevic. Ishtuganov won a straight-set, 6-3, 6-1, affair.
Sophomore Christina Loukas (women's diving):
Sophomore Christina Loukas swept the diving events in a 177-123 triumph over the No. 18 Boilermakers in Bloomington, Ind., on Jan. 21. The divers opened the meet early at noon when Loukas claimed the one-meter title with a dominant tally of 331.35. In the three-meter diving break, Loukas completed a title sweep with a 339.37 tally. Remarkably, Loukas did all of this while in the midst of competing at the Olympic Medal Potential Selection Camp in Indianapolis from Jan. 18-22. She returned to the camp immediately after the win over Purdue for another round of national team tryouts.
Senior forward Marco Killingsworth (men's basketball):
Killingsworth led the Hoosiers' to a share of first place in the conference with double-doubles in victories over No. 7/5 Illinois and Purdue. Killingsworth had a game-high 23 points and 12 rebounds as the Hoosiers defeated the Illini, 62-60, on Jan. 17. The victory marked the highest ranked opponent the Hoosiers had defeated at home since knocking off then-No. 1 Michigan State, 59-58, on Jan. 7, 2001. He was instrumental in the Hoosiers overcoming an 11-point deficit in the opening half against Illinois. The Montgomery, Ala., native followed that up with an 18-point, 10-rebound performance in the Hoosiers' 62-49 victory over archrival Purdue. The win also upped the Hoosiers' home court conference winning streak to 12 games dating back to last season. Killingsworth led IU in points, rebounds and assists (3) against the Boilermakers. With his double-doubles against Illinois and Purdue, Killingsworth became the first Hoosier since Jeff Newton to record double-doubles in back-to-back games. He tops the Hoosiers in scoring and rebounds on the season at 20.1 points and 7.5 rebounds per contest. With his performances last week, the 6-8, 268-pound forward leads the Big Ten in scoring during the conference season at 21.8 points per game.
Senior Ryan Ketchum (men's track and field):
Ketchum claimed the shot put title at Jan. 21's Indiana Invitational. Against Big Ten foes Ohio State and Purdue and intra-state rival Indiana State, Ketchum hurled an impressive 17.88m (58-8) in the shot put for the first-place finish. Additionally, the 17.88m mark met the NCAA's provisional standard of 17.75m in the event, making him the second Hoosier to reach the NCAA's provisional mark in any event this season (first-David Neville, 400m). Ketchum's throw was just under a meter farther than the next closest Big Ten competitor (Tyler Miller, Purdue). Ketchum took third in the weight throw with a hurl of 17.91m (58-9.25).
Senior Leila Vaziri (women's swimming):
Junior Leila Vaziri helped the No. 18 Hoosiers to a 177-123 conquest of No. 14 Purdue in Bloomington, Ind. Overall, Vaziri picked up four titles on the day. The quartet of Vaziri, freshman Sarah Stockwell, freshman Allison Kay and junior Annica Lofstedt won the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:43.38. That time now stands as the seventh-fastest effort in school history. In the 100-yard backstroke, Vaziri improved her B-cut time with a first-place time of 54.74 to earn her second title of the afternoon. In the 200-yard backstroke, Vaziri claimed another title with a first-place time of 2:02.39. In the 400-yard freestyle relay, the Hoosier team of Lofstedt, Vaziri, Kay and junior Clarissa Wentworth won the event with a 3:26.62.
Senior Guard Cyndi Valentin (women's basketball):
Valentin led IU in scoring in both of its contests last week. Against No. 7 Ohio State on Jan. 19, Valentin finished the night with a game-high 18 points to go along with three rebounds and two assists. Against the Wolverines on Jan. 22, Valentin went 7-of-14 from the field to notch another game-high 22 points. She also recorded three assists and three steals in the win.
Sophomore Brianna Williams (women's tennis):
Williams claimed victories at both the No.3 singles and doubles position to help the Hoosiers oust Kansas 5-2. With the win, the Hoosiers moved to 3-0 on the season.
