Where Are They Now?-Allison Skapin

Over the next several months, IUHOOSIERS.com will catch up with former Indiana women's basketball players to see where life has taken them since graduation from IU.
A native of Beaver Creek, Ohio, Allison Skapin (2000-2003) was a member of the 2002 Big Ten Tournament Championship team that also made its fourth appearance in school history at the NCAA Tournament. She played in 81 games during her career, and was a physical presence down low during her four-year career. Her career-high 10 points came against Illinois State on Nov. 31, 2001 and her career-high rebounds (eight), were against Arizona on Dec. 12, 1999.
Below is what Skapin had to say:
What have you done since graduation?
While I was continuing my job search, I began coaching. I was helping a high school varsity team. The next season I was going to help out at my former high school, but there was a seventh grade coaching position open. I agreed to take it. I found that I enjoy working with the kids, especially that age, and I am currently in grad school at the University of Dayton working on my master's and my teaching license. I also work part-time at a sporting goods store and am a Big Sister volunteer.
What are some of your best memories of playing basketball for the Hoosiers?
I had a lot of fun with the girls off the court as well as on. We were always there for each other, and we were always able to have a good time and make each other laugh. You form really close bonds with each other and even though I may not see that person for a long time, I still feel like we are good friends. On the court, we had a lot of fun during the Big Ten Tournament (when we won). I also really enjoyed the Alaskan Shootout Tournament. That was something we were able to experience that not a lot of people are able to.
Would you say playing basketball and receiving an education from Indiana has really helped you get to where you are today?
From a personal and individual standpoint, Indiana University gave me the most important education I could ever receive. It helped teach me about finding myself, believing in myself, and not giving up on myself. It taught me what I wanted in life, and helped fuel my drive to achieve that. It taught me no matter how tough the situation is that I am in, I have the strength and tenacity to come through all right. My years at IU taught me to have faith in myself and support others, and to go for things that I believe in. I think that finding yourself and what you truly want out of your life is the greatest gift a college experience can give you, and I am grateful for all of the lessons IU helped teach me along the way.
Do you still keep in touch with any former teammates?
Yes, maybe not on a weekly basis but a hello now and then. Jill Hartman, Heather Cassady, Rainey (Alting) Jones, Jamie Gathing, former assistant coach Paul Nixon, coach Keila Whittington, Jenny DeMuth, and Nicki Motto.
Any other information you would like to share (kids, spouses, etc,)
None of those yet! I am a new aunt though
