BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's tennis team rebounded after a tough morning loss to No. 14 Duke to defeat in-state rival Ball State, 7-0, on Jan. 29 at the Indiana Tennis Center. The Hoosiers are now 4-1.
"We used a little different lineup than we have in the previous four matches," Indiana head coach Lin Loring said. "We wanted to give some girls some rest and give a change to some that haven't played in a dual setting."
For the third time this season, the Hoosiers swept all three doubles matches to overwhelmingly claim the doubles point. To open doubles play, all three matches began 3-0 in Indiana's favor. In the No. 1 doubles position, senior Sarah Batty and junior Laura McGaffigan defeated Jessica Thompson and Haly Calderwood, 8-3.
In the shortest doubles match of the day, freshmen Stephanie Heller and Marah Calvo blanked Jennifer Pollack and Rachel Lemar, 8-0, at the No. 3 slot in their dual match debut. At the No. 2 doubles position, freshman Alba Berdala and junior partner Cecile Perton topped Ball State's Katie Owens and Stephanie Farrar, 8-3.
The Hoosiers continued to look strong in singles as Batty, Berdala and Heller all posted impressive 3-0 starts. Batty, who played her second match of the day in the No. 1 singles position, easily defeated Thompson, 6-2, 6-3.
McGaffigan topped Farrar at the No. 2 singles position convincingly by a score of 6-3, 6-1. At No. 3, Berdala made short work of Pollack, 6-1, 6-0.
Fischer, who played her first match of her career at the No. 4 position, beat Calderwood, 6-2, 6-3. In her first dual singles showing, Calvo dominated Emma Retter in the No. 6 slot, 6-1, 6-1. Heller, also playing her first singles match in a colligate dual setting, ousted Katie Owens, 6-7 (7-5), 6-1, 1-0(5).
The Hoosiers are back in action at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11 against Marquette followed by a doubleheader on Sunday, Feb. 12 against DePaul at 10 a.m., and Butler at 3 p.m., at the Indiana Tennis Center.
