Hoosiers Set for Huskies and Wolverines in Home Finale

Northeastern and Michigan Game Notes

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The No. 11 Indiana field hockey team is set for its final home weekend of the season. The Hoosiers will take on their final non-conference opponent in Northeastern on Saturday, Oct. 14 at 1 p.m., before hosting No. 20 Michigan on Senior Day, Sunday, Oct. 15 at 1 p.m. Both games are played in Mellencamp Pavilion.
Bidding Farewell
IU field hockey will bid farewell to its four seniors on Sunday's game against Michigan. Backs Morgan Miller and April Levins, midfielder Rachel Telian and forward Lydia Schrott will play their final game in Mellencamp Pavilion against the Wolverines.
The Northeastern Series
The Hoosiers and the Huskies are meeting for the second time. Last season, Indiana defeated Northeastern, 3-2, in Boston, as senior forward Lydia Schrott netted the first hat trick in program history.
Scouting the Huskies
Northeastern enters the contest with a 7-6 overall record, including wins in the last three contests. The Huskies have beat New Hampshire, Holy Cross, UMass, Brown, Delaware, Harvard and Drexel, while falling to Penn State, Boston College, Providence, Boston University, Towson and Hofstra. Northeastern will take on Connecticut on Oct. 11 before heading to Bloomington.
The Huskies are led by Stephanie Casper's seven goals and five assists and Whitney Shean's four goals and 11 assists. Liz Centofanti has played in 12 games and has notched 27 saves and a goals against average of .790.
The Michigan Series
Indiana and Michigan are meeting for the eighth time with the Wolverines holding the 8-1 lead in the series.
Scouting the Wolverines
Michigan enters the contest with Indiana 8-7 overall and 2-1 in the Big Ten. UM notched wins over Kent State, Richmond, Ball State, Louisville, Iowa, Michigan State, Miami (Ohio) and Central Michigan, while suffering losses from North Carolina, Wake Forest, Connecticut, Providence, Old Dominion, Penn State and Maryland.
Michigan is led by Lucia Belassi's six goals and one assist, while both Kelly Fitzpatrick and Stephanie Hoyer's five goals and one assist. Beth Riley has notched 57 saves and a goals against average of 2.40.
Nine is the Record
In IU's 9-0 shutout over Lindenwood on Oct. 8, the Hoosiers set the single-game team scoring record with their nine goals against the Lions. The previous mark of seven was set in last season's match against Lindenwood.
Head of the Pack
For the first time in program history, Indiana is atop the Big Ten standings. The Hoosiers are 3-0 in conference play so far this season.
Hats Off
Freshman forward Alina Valenti became the third Hoosier in program history to record a hat trick. Valenti, who made her first career start for IU against Lindenwood, scored three goals, marking the sixth time a Hoosier has scored three goals in a game.
Career Firsts
Three Hoosiers made their first career starts in the Cream and Crimson against Lindenwood on Oct. 8. Sophomore goalkeeper Jobi Manson, freshman forward Alina Valenti and freshman back Lucy Ireland all earned their first starting nod as Hoosiers. Additionally, Manson picked up her first win in the shutout victory and maintained her perfect save percentage. Junior midfielder Amanda Oyler and freshman back Fenna Geuskens scored their first goals for Indiana in the winning effort.
No Place Like Home
So far in 2006, Indiana is 6-0 when playing at home in the Mellencamp Pavilion. In the past two seasons, IU has only lost one game at home (vs. Penn State, 4-3, Oct. 28, 2005).
Eight is Great
A total of eight Hoosiers (Brown, Geuskens, Kiper, Miller, O'Connell, Oyler, Telian, Valenti) made an impact on the scoresheet against Lindenwood on Oct. 8, while four Hoosiers (Brown, Miller O'Connell, Oyler) tallied multiple points in the win.
First Time's a Charm
Sophomore goalkeeper Jobi Manson earned her first career start on Oct. 8 against Lindenwood. Manson not only earned her first career win as a Hoosier in her first start, she also claimed the shutout and maintained her perfect save percentage. The Lions took three penalty corners, but Manson saved their only shot on goal in the 9-0 win.
Last Time Out
Indiana moved to 12-2 last weekend with a 2-0 loss to then-No. 13 Louisville at U of L's Trager Stadium, before defeating Lindenwood, 9-0.
League Leaders
As a team, the Hoosier are atop this week's Big Ten standings (all games) in defensive saves with three. Senior forward Lydia Schrott leads the conference in points with 28 and game-winning goals with four. Senior back Morgan Miller heads the league in defensive saves with two, while junior goalkeeper Haley Exner sits at the top of the save percentage category at .806.
In conference games only, Schrott and junior forward Kate O'Connell are tied for first in goals (3) and goals per game (1.00).
Hoosiers Ranked No. 11
The Hoosiers maintained their No. 11 ranking in the STX/NFHCA poll released on Oct. 10. Five of this season's opponents are ranked in the top 20, including Ohio State (7), Penn State (8), Virginia (10), Louisville (12) and Michigan (20).
Bashore Shines at World Cup
Former IU All-American Kayla Bashore helped the United States to its best World Cup finish since 1994 with a sixth-place finish. Bashore made an appearance in every game for the U.S. The U.S. National Team finished the tournament with a 3-3-1 record, including wins over South Africa, Korea and Germany.
Up Next
Indiana hits the road for the remainder of the season. The Hoosiers will travel to East Lansing, Mich., to take on the Spartans on Saturday, Oct. 21. Game time is slated for 1 p.m. (ET). IU closes the regular season at Penn State on Sunday, Oct. 29. The game is at 1 p.m. (ET).
