No. 16 Hoosiers Set to Host Wisconsin

Setting the Scene
Indiana faces Big Ten foes Wisconsin and Northwestern this weekend in its final two home matches of the 2006 season. These will be the final two home games in the careers of IU seniors Ali Brown, Carrie DeFreece, Lauren Dieter, Lauren Lamping, Megan Pipkens and Shannon Vnoucek. The Hoosiers enter the weekend with a 12-game unbeaten streak, the fifth-longest current streak in the nation and the second-longest in school history. Indiana defeated Evansville 1-0 on Wednesday, Oct. 4, and tied Penn State 0-0 on Sunday, Oct. 8, snapping a streak of 11 straight PSU wins over the Hoosiers.
The All-Time Series
The Hoosiers have faced Wisconsin 15 times in the history of the two schools, with the Badgers holding a 7-6-2 edge in the all-time series. The Hoosiers topped UW last season in Madison with a 2-1 win on Kristen Zmijewski's goal in the 77th minute. Head coach Mick Lyon has a 1-4-1 record against the Badgers in his tenure as a head coach, 1-2-1 while with the Hoosiers.
Last Time Out
In one of the most exciting games in recent memory, the Hoosiers fought to a 0-0 draw with No. 13 Penn State on Sunday, Oct. 8, at Armstrong Stadium. Stacey Van Boxmeer made four saves to earn her sixth shutout of the season. The Hoosiers got their best opportunity in the 64th minute, when Lauren Lamping took a shot off an Ali Brown corner. Lamping blasted a bending shot toward the near-side post, but PSU keeper Alyssa Naeher made a diving stop to turn the ball aside.
Indiana had a golden opportunity near the end of the first OT on a wild scramble in front of the net. Off a Lamping corner, the ball ricocheted to Lindsay McCarthy, who shook a defender and lofted a shot that glanced off the crossbar. The rebound came to Kristin Arnold on the far side, and the freshman ripped a shot that was blocked by the Nittany Lion defense. Carrie DeFreece followed that up with another shot that the PSU defense knocked away.

Scouting Wisconsin
The Badgers enter the weekend with 10 points and a 3-2-1 mark in Big Ten Play. Wisconsin brings a 6-4-3 record into Bloomington after posting a win and a tielast weekend against Michigan State and Michigan, respectively. UW is led by Taylor Walsh's five goals and 13 points offensively, while goalkeeper Lynn Murray has a 0.78 goals against average this year.
Inside the Box
Junior keeper Stacey Van Boxmeer picked up her sixth shutout of the season against Penn State on Sunday, Oct. 8. After a week in which she registered two shutouts, she was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week by the conference on Monday, Oct. 9. She became the second Hoosier in as many weeks to bring home the honor, with Jenna Babcock taking home the hardware on Oct. 2.
Van Boxmeer's six shutouts this season tie her for fourth on IU's single-season list with Lauren Fabbro, who had six shutouts in 2004. The junior has eight career shutouts, which places her fourth on the all-time Hoosier list. Her season goals against average is now 0.54, which puts her on pace to post the best GAA in school history. Chrissy Heubi's 0.70 average in 2001 is the lowest in program history.
Going Streaking
After the Hoosiers' scoreless tie with Penn State, Indiana extended its unbeaten streak to 12 games, the second-longest in school history and the fifth-longest current streak in the nation. Indiana won 14 games in a row between Oct. 3, 1993, and Sept. 14, 1994. During the 12-game streak, IU has outscored its opponents 17-5, and has scored the game's first goal in nine of the 12 contests. The Hoosiers wrapped up an undefeated September (6-0-3) with their 1-0 win over Michigan State on Sept. 29, marking the first time in program history that IU has gone unbeaten in a full month. The Hoosiers are also 4-0-1 in the Big Ten for the first time in school history, with the previous best Big Ten start being a 3-2-0 mark to begin the 1997 and 1998 seasons, when the Hoosiers went 4-5-0 and 6-3-0 in Big Ten play, respectively.
In the Polls
Indiana's 12-game unbeaten streak has vaulted the Hoosiers into the national rankings for the first time since Oct. 12, 2001. IU made its first appearance in the NSCAA (National Soccer Coaches Association of America) poll at No. 16 this week, matching the highest ranking in program history, set on Oct. 6, 1998. The Hoosiers are ranked 24th by SoccerBuzz.com in its top 30, the first time IU has been ranked by the publication since 2003.
The Hoosiers have also moved up in the Great Lakes regional rankings, clocking in at second in the NSCAA poll and third by Soccer Buzz. IU is also off to its best start in Big Ten play, leading the conference at 4-0-1. This is the first time that the Hoosiers have led the conference this late in the year. IU's previous best starts were in 1997 and 1998, when the Hoosiers started 3-2-0 in conference play.
Climbing the Ladder
Several Hoosiers are approaching individual milestones, including senior forward Megan Pipkens. Pipkens is tied for sixth on the Hoosiers' list in career assists (12) and is eighth in career shots (119). The Holt, Mich., native is tied with Kris Fosdick for sixth and is one behind Carrie Watts for fifth place on the all-time assists list.
Right behind Pipkens on the career assists list is her classmate, Ali Brown. Brown's assist against Michigan on Oct. 1 was the 11th in her career, which ties her for eighth on the school's all-time list.
Stacey Van Boxmeer's 111 career saves and her 14 career wins are fifth-most in IU history. The junior needs one win and 22 saves to move past Lauren Fabbro into fourth on both lists. With her shutout of Penn State, she moved into third place on the Hoosier list in goals against average at 1.05.
Senioritis
The Hoosiers have seen significant contributions from their senior class this season. The top three scorers on the team (Lauren Lamping, Carrie DeFreece and Ali Brown) are all seniors, while Megan Pipkens and Lauren Dieter have combined for two assists on the season. The senior class is the second-smallest on the Hoosiers (there are two sophomores on the team), but the party of five has represented more than half (52 percent) of IU's points on the season.

Babcock Gains Recognition
Junior defender Jenna Babcock earned her first-career Big Ten honor on Oct. 2, being named the conference's Defensive Player of the Week. Babcock, who was also named to TopDrawerSoccer.com's National Team of the Week and the SoccerBuzz.com Elite Team of the Week, has been the leader of a Hoosier defense that has allowed just five goals in its last 10 games. Over the weekend, IU held Michigan and Michigan State to an aggregate 13 shots and one goal. The Hoosiers lead the conference with eight goals allowed.
Keeping `em Blank
After the Hoosiers' 0-0 tie with Penn State on Sunday, Oct. 8, IU has now posted seven shutouts on the year. That puts Indiana just one shutout shy of the program record of eight, set in 1993 and matched in 1998.
When Charlotte scored with just 20 seconds to play in the first half of the Hoosiers' 1-1 tie with the 49ers on Sept. 15, it stopped the second-longest shutout streak in IU history. Heading into the game, the Hoosiers had run off three straight shutouts, the seventh time in program history that Indiana has recorded three or more shutouts in a row and the first since Oct. 3-10, 2003, when IU shut out Iowa (1-0), Marshall (4-0) and Michigan (0-0).
Jersey Girl
Junior midfielder Lindsay McCarthy potted her second goal of the season in the Hoosiers' 1-0 win over Evansville on Oct. 4. The Galloway, N.J., native had an opportunity to make it a two-goal game, but keeper Whitney Raeon made a point-blank save midway through the second half to keep the score 1-0. McCarthy now has eight career goals, the third-most among active Hoosiers.
Using Her Head
Christie Kotynski has had a stellar season for the Hoosiers in the air in 2006, netting three goals, all on headers. Kotynski has also shown a flair for the clutch, as two of her three tallies have gone for game-tying goals and her goal against Michigan on Sunday, Oct. 1, was the game-winner. All three of Kotynski's goals have come in the final 16 minutes of regulation, and all have been the final goal of the game.
Hey Arnold!
Freshman Kristin Arnold entered the Oct. 1 contest against Michigan as one of the team's leaders in shots, but she had yet to score a point in her IU career. The Beavercreek, Ohio, native responded with a goal and an assist in IU's 2-1 win over Michigan for her first three career points. Arnold became the fifth IU freshman to register points on the season, joining Christie Kotynski (three goals), Liz Holby (one goal), Taylor Fallon (one assist) and Kelly Lawrence (one assist).
Watching the Milestones
Against Michigan State on Sept. 29, the Hoosiers recorded the 125th win in the history of the program, with Stacey Van Boxmeer registering the victory. The Hoosiers also reached the 600-save mark in Big Ten play in program history. Additionally, Ali Brown's first-half goal against Ohio State on Sept. 24 represented the 350th point in IU history during Big Ten play. IU is just one score away from reaching 400 goals as a program and is just three away from reaching 125 goals in Big Ten play.
DeFreece Strikes Again
Carrie DeFreece scored her fourth goal of the season in IU's 1-0 win over Michigan State on Friday, Sept. 29. DeFreece has scored all four of her goals of the season in shutout victories, and has netted three game-winning goals for the Hoosiers. The Olathe, Kan., native now has seven goals in her Indiana career to go along with five career assists.
LL Cool D
Lauren Lamping's goal against Minnesota on Sept. 22 was her second of the season and her career. Lamping has added four assists this season, which leads the team. Lamping has posted career-highs in goals, assists and points this year. She has also been a starter on the defense in all 14 contests and has been a crucial part of a defense that has allowed just five goals in its last 12 games.
Shot Down
Indiana was outshot for the first time this season against Penn State on Sunday, Oct. 8. The Nittany Lions tallied 16 shots to IU's 15 in the contest, though the Hoosiers put seven shots on goal to PSU's four. Through 14 games, Indiana has registered 230 shots, third most in the conference, and allowed just 122, which is the lowest total in the conference. IU is just 48 shots shy of the team record of 278, set by the 1997 squad.
