BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Freshman Jessica Boots netted her first career goal in the 66th minute to give No. 16 Indiana a 1-0 victory over Wisconsin on Friday, Oct. 13, at Armstrong Stadium. The win was the 150th victory in head coach Mick Lyon's career, and extended IU's unbeaten streak to 13 games.
"Obviously, it's a nice accomplishment to get to 150 wins," Lyon said. "But the more important thing is that we picked up another three points. This was a classic Big Ten contest, a hard-fought one, and it was great to get the win."
Lyon is now 43-36-12 for the Hoosiers and is 150-101-30 in his career. Before beginning his tenure in Bloomington, the Boston, England, native coached nine years at Evansville, winning four Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year awards.
Boots netted the lone goal for IU (9-2-4, 5-0-1 Big Ten) off a long, high cross by senior Lauren Lamping. Lamping lofted the ball toward the far side of the box, and the freshman headed the ball past keeper Lynn Murray inside the near post. Lamping was credited with her team-leading fifth assist of the year.
The Hoosiers and Badgers (6-5-3, 3-3-1) played a tight battle at midfield throughout the opening 45 minutes, with each defense allowing only three shots in the first half. In the second half, the Hoosier offense picked up, forcing Murray to make five saves in the frame.
On the other side, Van Boxmeer made three saves to pick up her seventh shutout of the season and third in a row. She is now tied for second on the single-season shutout list with Monica Cox (1993) and lowered her goals against average to 0.51 on the season. The Hoosiers have not allowed a goal since the second half of the Oct. 1 game against Michigan. Indiana outshot Wisconsin 11-8 in the contest.
The Hoosiers are in action again on Sunday, Oct. 15, when they will host Northwestern (7-7-1, 3-3-1), who lost to Purdue 2-1 on Friday night. The game will be the final home game in the career of IU seniors Ali Brown, Carrie DeFreece, Lauren Dieter, Lauren Lamping, Megan Pipkens and Shannon Vnoucek.
