MADISON, Wisc. - The Indiana volleyball team was defeated by No. 14 Wisconsin, 3-0 (30-9, 30-17, 30-27), on Sunday, Oct. 15, at the Wisconsin Field House. Indiana is now 10-10 on the season with a 1-7 mark in the Big Ten, while the Badgers improve to 14-4 overall with a 6-2 record in the conference.
After being topped 30-9 and 30-17 in the first two frames, the Hoosiers fought back in the third game. A kill by Erica Short put IU up 1-0 early, and the Hoosiers held onto that lead until Wisconsin took the 8-7 advantage. The two teams traded points back and forth throughout much of the game, but the Badgers took the lead again at 19-18 and held on to close out the frame at 30-27. Indiana hit .250 in the frame, it's highest of the match.
The Hoosiers were led by Juli Pierce's five digs on defense, while Lauren Ditteon chipped in four of her own. The Hoosiers totaled 10blocks as a team in the match, led by Annie Moddrell's six block assists and one solo block. Leading the way offensively for the Indiana was Gabrielle Allison with nine kills while Moddrell and Short each added six.
Wisconsin had three different players finish in double figures in kills on the match. Brittney Dolgner led the way with 15 kills, while Taylor Reinekie added 12 and Audra Jeffers tallied 11. Dolgner had the lone double-double of the match, finishing with 10 digs as well. Jocelyn Wack led the Badgers with 18 digs and Reineke added one solo block and seven block assists.
"Wisconsin did everything right," head coach Katie Weismiller said. "In the first game, they came out and played great from the beginning. There were over seven thousand fans there, and that was definitly an eye-opener for us. We competed in Game 3, but overall our defense broke down, and defense wins games. We need to get back to that."
Indiana returns to action on Friday, Oct. 20 when it plays host to Northwestern in University Gym. Match time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
