Setting the Scene
Indiana faces Big Ten foe Northwestern today in its final home match of the 2006 season. Today will be the final regular-season home game in the careers of IU seniors Ali Brown, Carrie DeFreece, Lauren Dieter, Lauren
Lamping, Megan Pipkens and Shannon Vnoucek. The Hoosiers enter today with a 13-game unbeaten streak, the fourth-longest current streak in the nation and the second-longest in school history. IU can match the school record with a win or tie today. Indiana defeated Wisconsin last night, 1-0, the third straight shutout for IU.
The All-Time Series
Indiana faces Northwestern on Sunday for the 15th time in the history of
the two programs. IU has a 6-6-2 record against the Wildcats all-time, with NU winning each of the last two games by matching 1-0 scores. This is the first time that Northwestern has visited Bloomington since 2003, when IU shut out its guests 3-0.
Last Time Out
Freshman Jessica Boots netted her first career goal in the 66th minute
to give No. 16 Indiana a 1-0 victory over Wisconsin on Friday, Oct. 13, at
Armstrong Stadium. The win was the 150th victory in head coach Mick Lyon's
career, and extended IU's unbeaten streak to 13 games.
Lyon is now 43-36-12 for the Hoosiers and is 150-101-30 in his career. Before beginning his tenure in Bloomington, the Boston, England, native coached nine years at Evansville, winning four Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year awards.
Boots netted the lone goal for IU (9-2-4, 5-0-1 Big Ten) off a long, high cross by senior Lauren Lamping. Lamping lofted the ball toward the far side of the box, and the freshman headed the ball past keeper Lynn Murray inside the near post. Lamping was credited with her team-leading fifth assist of the year.

Scouting Northwestern
Northwestern comes into today¹s contest at 7-7-1 and 3-3-1 in the Big
Ten. The Wildcats were topped by Purdue on Friday, Oct. 13, 2-1 in West
Lafayette. Alicia Herczeg scored the only goal for the Wildcats in the 11th minute, but tha Boilermakers scored in the 45th and 50th minutes to take the victory. NU is led offensively by Kelsey Hans, Jenny Dunn and Shannon Schneeman, who each have 12 points. Hans leads the team with five goals on the year. Defensively, the Wildcats have allowed just 132 shots on the year, while goalkeeper Lauren Johnston has a 1.31 goals against average in 2006.
Senioritis
The Hoosiers have seen significant contributions from their senior
class this season. The top three scorers on the team (Lauren Lamping, Carrie DeFreece and Ali Brown) are all seniors, while Megan Pipkens and Lauren Dieter have combined for two assists on the season. The senior class is the second-smallest on the Hoosiers (there are two sophomores on the team), but the party of five has represented more than half (52 percent) of IU's points on the season.
Keeping 'em Blank
After the Hoosiers¹ 1-0 win over Wisconsin, IU has recorded eight
shutouts on the year and three in a row. That ties the program record of
eight, set in 1993 and matched in 1998. Indiana has also not allowed a goal since Katelin Spencer scored in the 61st minute of IU¹s 2-1 win over
Michigan on Sunday, Oct. 1.
This is the second time this season and eighth time in program history that the Hoosiers have recorded three shutouts in a row, and IU currently has the fifth-longest shutout streak in school history.
When Charlotte scored with just 20 seconds to play in the first half of the Hoosiers' 1-1 tie with the 49ers on Sept. 15, it stopped the second-longest shutout streak in IU history. Indiana has allowed just eight goals through 15 games this season, and is threatening the record for fewest goals allowed. The Hoosiers let up 18 goals in 1998, the lowest in school history.
Sesquicentennial Celebration
Indiana head coach Mick Lyon had more to celebrate than just picking up three points on Friday, Oct. 13. The 1-0 victory was the 150th of the head
coach's career in his 14th year of coaching. Lyon is 43-36-12 in his five
years at Indiana, and is 150-101-30 in his career. Lyon led Evansville to
six Missouri Valley Conference championships and three NCAA Tournament
appearances.
Inside the Box
Junior keeper Stacey Van Boxmeer picked up her seventh shutout of the
season against Wisconsin on Friday, Oct. 13. After a week in which she
registered two shutouts, she was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week by the conference on Monday, Oct. 9. She became the second Hoosier in as many weeks to bring home the honor, with Jenna Babcock taking home the hardware on Oct. 2.
Van Boxmeer's seven shutouts this season tie her for second on IU's single-season list with Monica Cox, who had seven in 1993. The junior has nine career shutouts, which places her fourth on the all-time Hoosier list.
Her season goals against average is now 0.51, which puts her on pace to post the best GAA in school history. Chrissy Heubi¹s 0.70 average in 2001 is the lowest in program history.
