Sept. 19, 2006
During the 2006 season, IUHOOSIERS.com will give women's soccer fans an insider's look at what it's like to be a member of the team. Every Tuesday, a different Hoosier will bring her view of the weekend's events to IUHOOSIERS.com. The entry for Tuesday, Sept. 19, is by junior Suzie Teixeira.
This weekend was full of soccer and food. Friday morning was pretty standard. We started with an early-morning continental breakfast. We were all pumped because they had instant packaged breakfast meals like omelets, French toast and waffles. After that we had a light training session on Charlotte's practice field. We were truly impressed by the life-size, action statues that flooded their campus and also by their humongous softball field. All in all, it was a great time.
Then we had mandatory study hours. I'm not quite sure who all studied, but Kate Nierman, Ali Brown, Katy Stewart and I definitely did. We all went into the hotel lobby to knock out some serious study hours. The cleaning lady, Yolanda, found it difficult to clean around us, but after spraying Kate's homework multiple times, she somehow managed.
The game was pretty intense. For the most part, we played pretty well, but we definitely could have finished more of our opportunities. The match ended in a 1-1 draw. After the game, many of the girls went off to dinner with their parents. Some of the lucky few got to go out with the coaches to Ham's. They had fantastic Fire Fingers (we were truly impressed) and Ian even let us order dessert (to share, of course). During dinner, we watched the IU Men's Soccer Team play St. Louis. We all made a lot of noise when a kid on the other team took a cleat to his face. Go Hoosiers!
Saturday was full of traveling, another light training session and, of course, more food! At our training, coach emphasized confidence. He described Ali Brown's confident touch on the ball as "so sweet, it's good enough to eat." We all had a laugh.
After that, we went to Carrabas for dinner. We had a bit of a wait to be seated, so a big group of us decided to play a nice game of charades in the parking lot. Megan Reinhardt got us all when she did the movie "Don't be a Menace to Society while Drinkin' Your Juice in the Hood." We were stumped, to say the least.
After dinner, Natalie O'Bryan and I went into the lobby of the hotel to watch a couple of episodes of Grey's Anatomy. We were having a great time watching our favorite show until Ian scared us silly. About an hour later, we casually looked behind us and saw two women sitting and watching with us. They were each eating popcorn and drinking a soda. At first we were a little alarmed, but after a bit of reasoning, we were really just happy to share the great romantic comedy with others.
Sunday morning was also pretty standard. We woke up and ate breakfast. Afterwards, we all went our separate ways for about an hour until the team met to discuss the upcoming game. Then we drove to the field and started warming up by our bench. About 15 minutes into our warm-up the other team showed up and asked if we could warm up by their bench instead. We were confused and a bit annoyed, but we did as they asked. The second game was also intense. We fought hard, but ended up tying again.
I think the team learned a lot over the weekend. It's also great that we seem to get closer and closer the more time we spend together. We are all super excited for the Big Ten games to begin next weekend! Go IU!
