Coach's Corner With Mike Mayer

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Before heading to Bandon, Ore., for the Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge, men's golf head coach Mike Mayer took the time to speak to IUHOOSIERS.com about the upcoming tournament.
His thoughts on the tournament:
"We are extremely excited to be going to the Bandon Dunes Golf Resort to play in this year's Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge. It's an honor to be invited back to this event, which features the top teams from the Big Ten Conference and the Pac-10 Conference, for the third straight year. This year we get to play the tournament on Pacific Dunes, which is rated as one of the best golf courses in the world by nearly every golf authority. Not only will we get to play at such a wonderful venue, but we will also get the opportunity to play against some of the best competition in college golf. Nine of the 12 teams in the event are ranked in the top 50 in the latest GolfStat rankings and this gives us the chance to really show the country that we can compete against the best."
On sophomore Jorge Campillo:
"Jorge Campillo is coming off four straight solid events. He is currently ranked No. 21 in the country in the <> individual collegiate rankings and will be one of the players to beat at the Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge. He continues to impress me and everyone else in college golf with his abilities. Although links type courses aren't his favorite, I think he will challenge for the individual title at this event."
On sophomore Seth Brandon:
"Seth Brandon has been a little up and down this fall season. We were, and still are, looking for Seth to be a consistent contributor to the team and we will be striving for more consistency from Seth at this event. He has the ability to shoot low numbers on the best and toughest golf courses in the world and Pacific Dunes should be right up his alley."
On sophomore Dew Allenspach:
"We are beginning to see signs that Drew Allenspach is returning to his former glory. Drew had a rough end to his freshman season and a shaky start to his sophomore campaign, but he has had two really solid performances back-to-back. Hopefully he will continue his outstanding play in Oregon."
On freshman Alex Martin:
"Alex Martin did something at the Wolf Run Intercollegiate that none of his teammates have been able to do this year - beat Jorge Campillo in a collegiate tournament round. Alex's 74 on the final day at Wolf Run was the third best score of the day in an outstanding collegiate field. His 24th place finish was his best of his short career but there will be bigger and better to come. We look for Alex to continue to improve and to continue to adjust to the rigors of collegiate golf."
On junior Santiago Quirarte:
"Santiago Quirarte has been a missing link for the team this fall. We desperately need the real Santiago to return to this team. He has been playing much better lately and, if he does return, this team will be able to compete with any team in the country."
