IOWA CITY, Iowa - Defender Claire Goldenberg scored a golden goal in the 105th minute to break a scoreless tie and give Iowa a 1-0 win over Indiana on Friday, Oct. 20. The Hoosiers fell to 9-4-4 (5-2-1 Big Ten) after the loss and are in third place in the Big Ten standings with two games to play.
The two teams were scoreless through the first half, with IU outshooting the hosts 5-2 in the frame. Stacey Van Boxmeer made one save, while Iowa's Ali Becker turned aside Hoosier opportunities by Jenna Babcock, Ali Brown and Katy Stewart in the half.
IU and Iowa remained deadlocked at zero through regulation and headed into overtime. Neither team scored until 104:26, when Goldenberg gave the Hawkeyes the victory. Kelly Warner headed a ball to Kelsey Shaw, who flicked it to Goldenberg. The junior put it past Van Boxmeer for her first goal of the season.
Indiana returns to action Sunday, Oct. 22, at 1 p.m. CDT against Illinois in a key match in the Big Ten standings. The Illini earned their 10th win of the season and improved to 6-2-0 in conference play on Friday with a 2-0 win over Purdue. Illinois is two points ahead of the Hoosiers for second place in the Big Ten.
