BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana diver Christina Loukas has been named the IU Athlete of the Week for the week ending Oct. 22. The award is selected weekly by the IUHOOSIERS.com staff.
Loukas won both springboard competitions in the Hoosiers' season opener on Saturday, Oct. 21, a 171-127 victory over Kentucky. She did it the hard way, topping four 2006 All-Americans in Kentucky's Joey Brown (honorable mention, one-meter and platform) and Taryn Ignacio (first team, one-meter; national champion, platform) and IU teammates Lindsay Weigle (honorable mention, one- and three-meter; first team, platform) and Heather Chapman (honorable mention, platform) in both events.
Loukas' score of 373.95 in the three-meter was an Indiana school record, more than two points better than her own previous mark, and a whopping 16.20 higher than the previous three-meter dual-meet school record.
The junior from Riverwoods, Ill., posted a score of 301.05 to take the one-meter.
Loukas earned first team All-America status on all three boards in 2006, taking second in the three-meter, fifth in the one-meter and sixth in the platform.
Indiana's David Bubenicek (men's tennis), Ben Hesen (men's swimming) Lindsey Stuckey (women's tennis), Josh Tudela (men's soccer) and Emily Zulauf (volleyball) were also in consideration for the weekly award.

Bubenicek was the Hoosiers' top player at the ITA Midwest Regional, going 2-1 in singles and 2-1 in doubles with Dara McLoughlin. Bubenicek, the No. 18 seed, upset sixth-seeded D.J. Geatz of Minnesota, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6, on the second day of competition. In doubles, the duo was seeded fourth, and their only loss came to the No. 1 seed by an 8-6 score.
Men's Swimming
Ben Hesen - Jr. - Back/Fly - Jeffersonville, Ind.
Hesen won each event he entered as Indiana opened its season with a 50-point win over Kentucky. He started the meet by helping the 400-yard medley relay to a victory, giving the Hoosiers a lead they would never relinquish. He went on to win the 100-yard backstroke by nearly a full second and pulled out close wins in the 200-yard backstroke and the 100-yard butterfly.
Men's Soccer
Josh Tudela - Sr. - MF - Evansville, Ind.
Tudela was a key player for Indiana in the Hoosiers' 1-0 loss to Penn State on Friday. A leader in the midfield, he helped Indiana lead the game in shots (9-5) by setting up several shot opportunities and taking one shot himself. The team controlled the ball in its offensive third for most of the second half, and outshot the Lions 5-1 in the half.
Women's Tennis
Lindsey Stuckey - Fr. - Greensboro, N.C.
Stuckey went 4-1 at the ITA Midwest Regional. She went 3-0 in the singles qualifying draw to reach the main singles draw, where she fell to the No. 2 seed in the first round. Stuckey also won a consolation match at the tournament.
