BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - It's Homecoming week and in addition to the Indiana football team taking on Michigan State, there are plenty of activities for everyone to enjoy.
The Hoosiers take on the Spartans at noon on Saturday, Oct. 28. Head coach Terry Hoeppner has issued the Hoosier Nation Challenge, calling for 50,000 raucous fans to pack "The Rock" for one of the biggest home games in recent memory.
"I'm challenging the Hoosier Nation to pack 'The Rock' with 50,000 screaming fans when we play Michigan State," Hoeppner said. "We want you to celebrate Homecoming and help us earn another victory. Our fans have played a huge role in our progress this season. We have come a long way, but we have a ways to go. It's always a lot more fun to have the fans with us on our journey to Play 13."
Part of celebrating Homecoming is participating in the events prior to and following the game. Kicking off the festivities is the 48th Annual Homecoming Parade on Friday, Oct. 27. Watch the pageantry of "Glory Days" of IU travel west down Third Street and north on Indiana Avenue to the Sample Gates.
After the parade, the Sample Gates will serve as the sight for the official Homecoming Pep Rally with Indiana University President Adam W. Herbert and coach Hoeppner headlining the event. In addition, see the IU Football players, the Marching Hundred, the Hoosier cheerleaders, the RedSteppers and a fireworks celebration!
Wrapping up Friday evening, the Student Alumni Association (SAA) presents critically acclaimed Straight No Chaser's Homecoming Fall Concert. The show is free for SAA members with proof of membership or $10 for alumni or community members. Tickets are available at the door or in the SAA office, located at 1000 E. 17th St. Please call (812) 855-9263 with any questions.
Leading up to kickoff on Saturday, join the Hoosiers in "The Walk" at 10 a.m. before heading to the 19th Annual Homecoming Lunch. The lunch is $15 per person and will be held at the Mellencamp Pavilion. Kick off your game day with performances by the Singing Hoosiers, the Alumni Band and the IU cheerleaders! Meet the Homecoming king and queen candidates and hear from President Herbert and other IU administrators.
The action does not stop with the game, as Hoosier fans will have a unique football and basketball doubleheader opportunity. Approximately one hour after the conclusion of the football game the IU basketball team will hold a free scrimmage that is open to the public at Branch McCracken Court at Assembly Hall.
