Since coming to Indiana, I've learned:
I've learned more about who I am. College is a time where you kind of define yourself, and I feel like since I've been here I've learned a lot about myself, and what to look for in life.
What is your favorite sport besides soccer?
Golf, but I'm terrible at it. I like playing golf, going out there and driving the carts and stuff, but I'm just not that good.
Who has been the biggest influence in your life and why?
My parents. They support me in everything I do and they're always behind me. They're at almost every single game that we play.
The best thing about Indiana is:
8 a.m. practices. Who wouldn't love such a thing? No, the best thing about Indiana is my teammates.
What makes Indiana special from any other program?
The tradition, the coaches, the players and the attitude that is carried with this team. We always strive to be the best, always strive to win. That's what makes this program different.
The teammate I most admire is who, and why?
Doug Reisinger. He brings it every day. I admire him for some of the stuff that he goes through, and at the same time he always keeps his head up and keeps going.
Name one thing that you wish you were better at?
There's two things I wish I was better at. One is scoring goals. The other one is playing guitar, and I'm not very good at that either right now.
Describe your presence on the field. What do you bring to the team?
I usually try to bring the team together, I try to communicate a lot. I try to use my head a lot more than just my physical abilities in that inside midfielder spot. There's a lot of mental aspects that go into it.
Something that many people don't know about you is:
I'm actually pretty artistic. I like to draw a lot. I took some classes here. I'm still majoring in business, but I like to draw when I have time. I also like to listen to music. I've got an artsy side to me that you might not expect.
Do you have a nickname that your teammates gave you? What is it and why?
People call me Mel, because my last name's Mellencamp. If people call me John, they get it confused with John Michael Hayden, so Mel's the best one. Sometimes they call me Cougar.
