WILMINGTON, N.C. - The Indiana men's golf team stands in sixth place after the first round of The Landfall Tradition, held at the Jack Nicklaus Course at Landfall Country Club. The Hoosiers turned in an 18 hole score of 306 for their placement after the first day of the tournament, which is hosted by UNC Wilmington.
"The golf course played totally different than it did during the practice round and we had some trouble adjusting," head coach Mike Mayer said. "With the windy, wet weather today as well, the course played extremely difficult."
Leading the way for Indiana on the first day was sophomore Drew Allenspach, who stands in a tie for 13th after carding a three-over-par 75 in the first round. Just one shot behind him is freshman Alex Martin, who turned in a four-over-par round of 76 to finish the day in a tie for 17th position. Junior Santiago Quirarte shot a five-over 77 in the first round, good for a tie for 25th heading into the second round on Saturday.
Sophomore Seth Brandon is currently tied for 31st after turning in a round of 78 on Friday, and he is followed by classmate Jorge Campillo, who stands in a tie for 36th position after carding a 79 in the first round.
"Drew really held in there and played well for us today, and Alex and Santiago made contributions as well," Mayer said. "I am pleased with where we stand after how we played, and if we can get Seth and Jorge back on board, we will be fine. As it has been all season, if we are all on the same page, good things will happen. We are still in this championship and can still come back and win it."
Tulsa leads the field after turning in a team score of 295 on Friday. Purdue is just one shot shy of the lead after carding a first round score of 296 and Ohio State stands in third with a 299. Mitch Cohlmia of Tulsa and Bobby Knowles of Kansas both sit atop the leaderboard after firing rounds of one-under-par 71 on Friday.
The second round of the tournament is set to begin at 8:17 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 28. The final round of The Landfall Tradition will be played on Sunday, Oct. 29, with tee times beginning at 7:30 a.m. Results will be available on IUHOOSIERS.com following each round of play and live scoring will also be available throughout the tournament at www.golfstat.com.
