BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana University volleyball team fell to No. 9 Purdue, 3-0, in a midweek matchup at University Gym. The Hoosiers are now 10-7 overall and 1-4 in the Big Ten while Purdue improved to 14-2 overall and 4-1 in the conference.
"Purdue is a very good team," head coach Katie Weismiller said. "We are competing, but we are just not able to finish right now. We have great players on different nights, but we haven't been able to put it together all in one match."
The Hoosiers jumped out to the early 2-0 lead in the first game and held onto that lead until Purdue tied it up at 10-10. The two teams traded points back and forth from then on until the Boilermakers went on a 6-1 run to close out the game at 30-24.
Purdue took the early advantage in the second stanza, but the Hoosiers battled back to knot the score at 5-5. Three consecutive hitting errors by Indiana led to Purdue taking a 14-11 lead, but Indiana tied it up at 18-18. However, the Boilermakers took back control and took the game with a score of 30-26.
Indiana took control of the third game, jumping out to a quick 4-1 lead. The Hoosiers ultimately led by six at various points throughout the game, but after holding a 23-17 advantage, the Boilermakers started chipping away at that lead. Two Purdue kills and a hitting error by Indiana tied the score at 25-25 and the teams traded points back and forth before three straight kills by the Boilermakers gave them the game, 30-27.
The Hoosiers were led in the match by Lauren Ditteon with 14 kills. She also had just two errors in 30 attempts for a .400 hitting percentage. Juli Pierce had 23 digs in the match to pace Indiana and Annie Moddrell added three block assists.
The Hoosiers will be in action next on Friday, Oct. 6 when they travel to Iowa City, Iowa to take on the Iowa Hawkeyes. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
