Van Boxmeer Wins Weekly Honor

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Junior goalkeeper Stacey Van Boxmeer has been named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday, Oct. 9. Van Boxmeer earned a pair of shutouts this week as the Hoosiers (8-2-4, 4-0-1 Big Ten) extended their unbeaten streak to 12 games with a win over Evansville and a tie with Penn State.
Van Boxmeer opened the weekend by blanking the Purple Aces in Evansville on Wednesday, Oct. 4. The Hoosier defense neutralized a strong UE offense, limiting it to just seven shots, of which only one was on goal. Van Boxmeer made the save, off midfielder Heidi Grey, to give IU its sixth shutout of the season.
The Collingwood, Ont., native followed up that effort with a brilliant shutout of No. 13 Penn State on Sunday, Oct. 8. The keeper made four saves, including point-blank stops of two of the conference's top scorers - Aubrey Aden-Buie and Katie Schoepfer. Van Boxmeer now has six shutouts on the season and eight in her career, which places her fourth on the single-season and all-time lists, respectively.
Van Boxmeer is the second Hoosier in a row to earn Defensive Player of the Week honors, as defender Jenna Babcock received the honor on Oct. 2 after the Hoosiers allowed one goal in a weekend sweep of Michigan and Michigan State. Van Boxmeer is on pace to break the single-season record for lowest goals against average in Hoosier history. She currently has a GAA of 0.54, which bests Chrissy Heubi's 0.70 mark in 2000.
The Hoosiers will face Wisconsin and Northwestern in Bloomington this weekend, in the final home contests for IU's six seniors - Ali Brown, Carrie DeFreece, Lauren Dieter, Lauren Lamping, Megan Pipkens and Shannon Vnoucek. IU will host Wisconsin (6-4-3, 3-2-1 Big Ten) on Friday, Oct. 13, at 7 p.m. EDT before facing off with Northwestern (7-6-1, 3-2-1 Big Ten) on Sunday, Oct. 15 at noon. Indiana sits atop the Big Ten standings with 13 points this season.
