BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana volleyball team was defeated by Michigan, 3-0 (30-20, 30-21, 30-28), on Saturday, Nov.11, in University Gym. Indiana is now 10-17 on the season with a 1-15 mark in the Big Ten, while the Wolverines improved to 20-9 with a 7-9 record in conference play.
"Michigan came in strong today after a upset of Purdue yesterday," Head coach Katie Weismiller said. "Our offense was more on the ball tonight, but Michigan played a very fast-tempo offense and our block was not able to stop it. We just need to keep serving well and establishing our block."
Michigan State controlled the first two games, 30-20, and 30-21. However, the third game was tight, with the Hoosiers taking the early lead at 6-3. The score flipped back in Michigan's favor on two straight service aces at 11-7, but the Hoosiers battled back and tied the score at 14-14 on a kill by Erica Short. The Hoosiers then opened up a lead that would stand until the Wolverines knotted it back up at 18-18.
After trading points back and forth, IU took a 24-22 lead on two consecutive kills by Allison Regas. Following a timeout by Michigan, the Spartans tied it up at 24-24 and then took the lead at 25-24 on an attack error by Short. Michigan held onto that lead and closed out the game, and the match, at 30-28.
The Hoosiers were led by Short's 12 kills. She also had two digs, one solo block and one block assists. Gabrielle Allison also had nine kills while Lauren Ditteon added eight of her own. Juli Pierce led the Hoosiers on defense with 14 digs while Ditteon and Sara Diehl each tallied six.
Michigan had three players in double-figures in kills, led by Katie Bruzdzinski with 20. Erin Penn had 12 while Veronica Rood added 10. Megan Bower led the Wolverines with 21 digs.
Indiana returns to action on Friday, Nov. 18, when it travels to Champaign, Ill., for a matchup with Illinois. Match time is slated for 8 p.m.
