As part of an ongoing online series, IUHOOSIERS.com will highlight each week in Indiana athletics history. This week will highlight Nov. 13-19.
Nov. 14, 1998 - Down 19-7 in the second quarter, the football team rebounded to defeat Minnesota 20-19. Indiana began the comeback with a 10-play, 80-yard drive that was capped by a 5-yard touchdown pass from Antwann Randel El to true freshman tight end Craig Osika. The Hoosiers would score the only points of the second half on a 9-yard touchdown run by Randel El with 6:35 remaining in the third quarter.
Nov. 15, 1975 - In its first year as a varsity program, the Hoosier volleyball team won the IAIAW State Championship, winning 15-5, 15-13, over Valparaiso. Indiana also defeated Ball State and Indiana State during the championships. The Hoosiers would also win the crown in 1976.
Nov. 15, 1981 - Jim Spivey won the NCAA District IV cross country meet with a time of 29:14.06. The next week he would finish 20th at the NCAA Championships to earn All-America honors.
Nov. 16, 1974 - The Indiana men's soccer team played its first NCAA Tournament game in just its second year as a varsity program. Although the Hoosiers fell 2-0 to SIU-Edwardsville to end the year with a 14-3 record, the game set the foundation for success in years to come. Indiana is making its 31st appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 2006.
Nov. 17, 2000 - The women's basketball team defeated Washington 77-74 in overtime to open the 2000-01 season. Freshman guard Anna Waugh had a game-high 17 points for the Hoosiers, while junior Heather Cassady added 15 points.
Nov. 18, 2001 - Tom Coverdale led the men's basketball team with 18 points, four assists and six rebounds as IU slipped past Charlotte, 65-61, to open the 2001-02 season. The 49ers led 31-25 and out-rebounded Indiana, 24-16, in the first stanza. The Hoosiers chipped away at the lead throughout the second half before a three-pointer by Dane Fife cut the Charlotte lead to just six points with 12:25 left to play. A dunk by George Leach knotted the score at 51-51 and the Hoosiers controlled play from then on out to capture the game.
