Indiana Opens Competition at U.S. Open

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Current and former Hoosiers alike participated on the first day of the U.S. Open on Nov. 30, with former Indiana All-Americans Sergiy Fesenko and Kevin Swander both earning spots in the finals at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center.
Fesenko finished second in the A-Final of the 400-meter freestyle in 3:53.46, just 0.26 behind winner Ous Mellouli. Fesenko earned his spot in the finals with a fourth-place finish in the morning preliminary session in 3:56.54.
Swander won the C-Final of the 100-meter breaststroke, turning in a time of 1:04.92. Swander, who holds the IU record in the 100 breast, finished 19th overall in the morning prelims in 1:06.10 to earn his spot in the finals.
The only current Indiana swimmer in action on the first day of competition was junior Pat Penoyar, who also swam in the 100 breast. Penoyar finished 34th in the prelims with a time of 1:07.28, making him the sixth-fastest man in IU history in the event.
