BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The awards continue to roll in for freshman defender Kelly Lawrence, who was named to the All-Great Lakes Region Third Team by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas. Lawrence was one of just two freshmen to be named to the all-region squad by the NSCAA.
Lawrence had an outstanding freshman year, starting in the Hoosiers' final 19 contests. The Chigwell, Essex, England, native tallied one assist on the season, and was one of the leaders of a Hoosier defense that allowed just 15 goals on the year, the fewest allowed by any squad in IU history. Lawrence was a unanimous selection to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team for her efforts, and was also selected second team all-conference.
The freshman recently played in a pair of friendlies for England's national Under-19 squad, helping her team to a pair of victories over Iceland. She will rejoin the squad in February for a trip to La Manga, Spain, where they will face some of the top teams in the world. Phase 2 of UEFA qualifying will begin in April, and the top seven teams from that draw will travel to Iceland for the UEFA Under-19 Championship from July 18-29, 2007.
Indiana finished the 2006 season with a 9-7-4 overall record and a 5-4-1 mark in Big Ten play, finishing third in the regular season.
