Indiana senior Megan Martz is a member of the Cream cheerleading squad for the 2006-07 season. A native of Fishers, Ind., Martz sat down with IUHOOSIERS.com for 10 questions so IU fans can get to know a little more about her.
When did you start cheerleading?Â
"I started cheerleading in the fifth grade. I was a gymnast for 11 years and also tried diving for a while. My mom cheered in high school and at Ball State University, so I thought I would give it a try."
Teammate or coach I admire the most and why?Â
"I really admire my current coach, Julie Clements. She has taught me what cheerleading and tradition are really about. Before I came to college, all I cared about was competition and didn't truly understand the meaning of cheerleading. Since I've been at IU, Julie has showed the rest of the team and myself how important tradition and understanding the game really are."
Favorite quote?Â
"You are never a loser until you quit trying." by Mike Ditka. I like this simple quote because there are many times in my life that I feel like just giving up, but I always have to remember to continue trying in order to succeed."
Most memorable IU athletics moment?Â
"Besides for the IU-Duke basketball game last year, my most memorable moment would be participating in the Circle City Classic parade with President Herbert followed by lunch with him at the Lilly House in Indianapolis. It was great getting to know the President of my university and learning more about IU."
Other than cheerleading, what IU sport would you play?Â
"I would probably try diving. My best friend, Jade, is a diver at IU and it would be fun to practice and compete with her again."
What is your favorite place on IU's campus?Â
"My favorite place is the Union. I love getting cookies at the Sugar and Spice store and shopping around in the bookstore. It is also a quiet place to study and relax."
What is your major?Â
"I am a biology major and just applied to dental school. I've always been interested in the sciences and have enjoyed working for my orthodontist for several summers in a row."
Favorite aspect of cheerleading?Â
"My favorite aspect of cheerleading are the games. I love watching football and basketball and enjoy cheering at them even more. It is great to be able to support great teams at a Big Ten school."
Most prized possession:Â
"My necklace from my mom is my most prized possession. For my 18th birthday, my mom took the diamond out of her wedding ring from my dad and put it in a necklace for me. It is very meaningful to me."
What makes Indiana special from any other program?Â
"At Indiana, we have such great tradition and a great reputation. I am proud to wear my uniform and anything that says Indiana University Cheerleading. I feel like we are such a close program and consider my teammates great friends of mine. I will be very sad to graduate at the end of this year, but look forward to coming back and supporting the program year after year."Â
