As part of an ongoing online series, IUHOOSIERS.com will highlight each week in Indiana athletics history. This week will highlight Dec. 11-17.
Dec. 12, 1992 - The Indiana women's basketball team defeated in-state rival, Indiana State, 87-70, in the Big Four Classic in Muncie, Ind. The victory was a part of the program's third-longest win streak in history. The streak spanned 11 games from Dec. 1, 1992-Jan. 17, 1993.
Dec. 13, 1998 - The Indiana men's soccer team claimed its fourth NCAA championship on Dec. 13, 1998, as the Hoosiers defeated Stanford, 3-1, in Richmond, Va., to close the season with an overall record of 23-2.
Dec. 14, 2002 - In front of 32,055 fans, the Indiana men's basketball team and Purdue dueled in the RCA Dome for bragging rights as Purdue looked to oust the sixth-ranked Hoosiers. IU won its eighth straight game with the 66-63 victory, getting off to its best start since 1989-90 when IU began 10-0. George Leach and Jeff Newton recorded double-doubles. Newton had 16 points and 12 rebounds - with all 12 boards on the defensive end of the court and all 16 points in the second half. Newton's double-double was his fifth straight of the year. Leach added 11 points and 14 rebounds of his own en route to his second double-double of the season.
Dec. 17, 1927 - The Indiana wrestling team competed in its first dual match in the month of December in 1927. The Hoosiers convincingly defeated Monmouth, 26-3.
