Two Hoosiers Named Freshman All-Americans

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Two days after earning All-Great Lakes Region laurels from Soccer Buzz, a pair of freshmen from the Indiana women's soccer team have been named to the Freshman All-America Teams by the publication. Midfielder Christie Kotynski was named to the third team and defender Kelly Lawrence was named to the fourth team.
The two freshmen represent the first-ever Freshman All-America honors in program history. They are also the first IU players to earn national honors from the publication. The two were the only position players to be named to the teams from the Big Ten - goalies Alyssa Naeher of Penn State (third team) and Lauren Robertson of Ohio State (fourth team) were the conference's only other honorees.
Kotynski was a standout for the Hoosiers in her debut season at midfield, contributing on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. She scored four goals on the season, including the game-winner on Sunday, Oct. 1, against Michigan. The 5-11 native of Hudson, Ohio, was a force in the air, scoring three goals on headers and competing for nearly every ball in the air in the midfield.
Lawrence quietly had a stellar season at the back for Indiana after bringing a slew of international experience to Bloomington. The freshman tallied just one assist in the regular season - a free kick to set up a game-tying goal by Kotynski - but started the final 19 games for IU and helped the defense lead the conference in both goals allowed (15) and shots allowed (180). Lawrence was also named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-Great Lakes Third Team.
