Dec. 18, 1999 - Charlie McDaniel, a former wrestler and wrestling coach for the Hoosiers, was named the Monroe County Male Athlete of the Century by the Bloomington Herald-Times. McDaniel won NCAA titles in 1935 and 1938, and finished second in the nation in 1936. The Bloomington native also coached the Hoosiers from 1945-72 and led IU wrestlers to All-America status on 13 occasions.
Dec. 20-22, 1981 - The IU women's basketball team knocked off UC Irvine, Arizona and Pepperdine to emerge as champion of the UC Irvine Christmas Tournament. The Hoosiers moved to 6-2 on the season with the wins, and would eventually wrap up the year with a 17-13 record, their third winning season in a row.
Dec. 21, 1979 - The Indiana football team registered its first bowl victory in program history, defeating No. 9 Brigham Young 38-37 in the 1979 Holiday Bowl in San Diego, Calif. Tim Wilbur delivered the crucial score, returning a punt 62 yards for a touchdown with 6:53 to go, and the extra point gave IU a one-point lead that it never relinquished, as BYU kicker Brent Johnson missed a 27-yard field goal attempt in the final seconds.
Dec. 21, 1992 - IU Athletics Director Clarence Doninger announced the hiring of Joe Kelley as the first varsity head coach of women's soccer at Indiana. Kelley, who was an assistant and player for Indiana under legendary men's coach Jerry Yeagley, led IU to 85 wins and two NCAA Tournament berths from 1993-2001.
Dec. 22, 1982 - In a battle between two teams ranked in the top five, No. 5 Indiana topped its arch-rival, No. 2 Kentucky, 62-59 in Assembly Hall. The win moved IU to 8-0 on the young season, en route to a 15-1 start and its fourth straight trip to the NCAA Tournament. Jim Thomas and Randy Wittman each notched double-doubles in the contest, with Wittman leading all players with 17 points and 12 rebounds.
