BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana men's cross country, men's golf, women's golf and men's tennis programs were publicly recognized by the NCAA for achieving Athletic Performance Rates (APRs) among the top 10 percent of all Division I institutions. All four programs had perfect scores of 1000.
The APR is the primary tool in recent NCAA academic reform that gauges academic eligibility, retention and graduation.
IU Associate Athletics Director for Academic Services Grace Calhoun said that the athletics department is generally pleased with its 2004-05 APR results.
"The numbers signal a commitment to recruiting student-athletes capable of succeeding at this world-class institution, and providing the support and resources necessary to achieve their full academic potential once here," Calhoun said. "Much like IU's GSR (Graduation Success Rate) which exceeds the NCAA Division I-A rate (81 and 76 percent, respectively), almost all of Indiana's 24 sponsored sports currently exceed the Division I-A and Division I public institution APR marks, and several by as many as 20 to 40 points. While we view this as a positive start, we are working to build on this success in future years. Indiana University has one of the oldest and most progressive academic services programs for student-athletes in the country. The athletic department is continually evaluating how to better serve its student-athlete population through the use of technology, the implementation of the latest techniques in learning initiatives, as well as through ever-increasing collaboration with faculty, campus advisors, and campus student-services personnel."
