Mellencamp Named IU Scholar-Athlete of the Week

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - On a weekly basis, IUHOOSIERS.com will recognize top academic performances by Hoosier student-athletes with the IU Scholar-Athlete of the Week award. For the week ending Nov. 26, sophomore men's soccer player John Mellencamp earned the honor as selected by IU Athletics' Academic Services.
"I am very proud of John," Indiana head coach Mike Freitag said. "He's worked hard both on the field to earn a starting spot and in the classroom. He's the type of student-athlete that we love to have in our program."
A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, the midfielder played in 20 games for the Hoosiers during the 2006 season, starting 13. He had four assists on the year.
According to academic advisor Kelly Noonan, Mellencamp has done an excellent job of balancing his academic and athletic commitments. "John is working towards a degree in business management, and his professors have had positive things to say about his performance this semester," Noonan said. "His commitment and hard work has paid off in the classroom and on the soccer field, and he is a great example for other student-athletes."
