As part of an ongoing online series, IUHOOSIERS.com will highlight each week in Indiana athletics history. This week will highlight Dec. 4-10.
Dec. 3-4, 1998 - The Indiana volleyball team defeated Northern Iowa, 3-0 (17-15, 15-7, 15-5), on Dec. 3 for the first NCAA tournament victory in program history. The following day, IU fell to host institution Arkansas, 3-0 (8-15, 5-15, 4-15), in its first foray into the second round.
Dec. 6, 1986 - Four days after a 67-62 defeat of Notre Dame, the IU men's basketball team made it back-to-back wins over regional rivals, downing Kentucky 71-66 in Bloomington. The win over the 13th-ranked Wildcats made the Hoosiers 3-0 on the season and was their first of seven victories over ranked opponents en route to the fifth national championship in school history.
In front of a crowd of 17,232, third-ranked Indiana got 26 points from Steve Alford on 10-of-19 shooting, his third straight game of 20 points or more on the young season. Dean Garrett added a double-double in the win with 13 points and 12 rebounds, while Daryl Thomas posted 12 points and seven rebounds for the Hoosiers.
Dec. 6, 1974 - The Indiana women's basketball team defeated Illinois, 76-16, in Assembly Hall to open the 1974-75 season. The 60-point margin of victory is the second-highest total in program history.
Dec. 7, 1995 - The IU wrestling team took a 25-13 decision at Missouri to open the dual meet season. It was the first of 16 dual victories in 1995-96 for the Hoosiers, who posted a 16-2 record, including a 6-1 mark in the Big Ten, for the best dual season in Indiana history.
Dec. 10, 1983 - The IU men's soccer team repeated as NCAA champions, defeating Columbia, 1-0, in double overtime. In the second extra period, Pat McGauley scored on a pass from Rodrigo Castro for the first consecutive NCAA titles since San Francisco accomplished the feat in 1975-76.
