Zayner Named IU Scholar-Athlete of the Week

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - On a weekly basis, IUHOOSIERS.com will recognize top academic performances by Hoosier student-athletes with the IU Scholar-Athlete of the Week Award. For the week ending Sept. 25, junior men's soccer player Jed Zayner earned the honor as selected by IU Athletics' Academic Services.
"Jed is a dedicated individual both academically and athletically," Indiana head men's soccer coach Mike Freitag said. "He is exactly what we look for in a student-athlete. He works hard and wants to succeed both in the classroom and on the field. Jed has been a key factor in our program winning back-to-back national titles in his first two seasons and is a national player of the year candidate this season. "
Zayner, an Orland Park, Ill., product, is heavily involved in community service and several groups outside of the soccer team. Additionally, Zayner continued his involvement on campus by introducing Aimee Mullins, an inspiring athlete who has set world records in the 100m and 200m dash at the Paralympics, prior to her CHAMPS/Lifeskills speech at IU on Sept. 19.
"Jed exhibits passion in everything he does," academic advisor Jenn Townsend said. "He is just an outstanding kid. He really goes out of his way to be involved in the community and on campus, and has friends on a number of teams. When the soccer team is not traveling or competing, you will frequently find him at other IU athletic events supporting their teams."
