BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - On a weekly basis, IUHOOSIERS.com will recognize top academic performances by Hoosier student-athletes with the IU Scholar-Athlete of the Week award. For the week ending April 30, freshman Brittany Billingsley earned the honor as selected by IU Athletics' Academic Services.
"We've watched Brittany work hard all year both on and off the water," assistant coach Carmen Mirochna said. "Her outstanding academic record and her Big Ten Championship silver medal show it. On behalf of all three coaches, we are extremely proud to have her represent us as Scholar-Athlete of the Week. Brittany doesn't do a lot of talking, so when she has something to say it's usually poignant. I think the best quote of this year was when she matter-of-factly said, `I just hate to lose.' She strikes you as a quiet athlete, but watching her race you can tell she sees no reason why she shouldn't be the best if she's got anything to do with it. I can't wait to see that innate competitive nature come to fruition on Varsity. The determination she exudes as a novice will be the confidence and medal-winning attitude that we can translate into Hoosier boat speed".
Billingsley earned Alpha Beta honors during her first semester at Indiana. She also applied to the Kelley School of Business, and helped the first novice eight to IU's initial Big Ten medal with a silver finish at the Big Ten Championships.
"Not only is she a great student and an athlete, but Brittany is a truly genuine and sincere person," academic advisor Mattie White said. "She is always willing to help out those in need. When her hometown was hit by the tornadoes this spring, Brittany would go home in her spare time between school and practice to help those in her community victimized by the storms. She expects nothing but greatness from herself and is committed to pursuing excellence. I know her future here at IU will be bright because of who she is and what she stands for as a person. It has truly been an honor to work with Brittany this year."
