Opening Statement:
DM: "We were disappointed in not being able to close [the game] out. It's hard to say that at this point in our season we are still learning how to play for 40 minutes. We have done some good things in terms of continuing to fight and continuing to battle. We battled all the way back into the game, and we got a little bit of help from them because they missed some free throws. At the same time, we had to come to the other end and make some shots. We have to work past some slow starts to be able to put ourselves into position against good teams, where we cannot just compete, but we also have a chance to win and close games out. It was difficult for our guys, learning at the late point that we did, about coach [Davis] being unable to join us. To their credit, I thought that they came out in the second half and fought harder."
On the team's overall play:
DM: "I think that both on the road and at home, when you boil it down, our defense is not where it needs to be. We've addressed that in different ways by trying to change up some things, playing a little zone and pressing a little bit, but it eventually comes down to you being able to take care of your man. We have struggled in that department for far too long."
On the final play of the game:
DM: "We were trying to push the ball to get [Marshall] Strickland on the run. We wanted Earl [Calloway] to penetrate, draw Strickland's man, and then kick it out to him. But Iowa did a great job in trying to take [Strickland] away from us. We knew though that if we couldn't get the ball to Strickland, we had the trail in [A.J.] Ratliff."
