LA JOLLA, Calif. - The No. 13 Indiana women's water polo team finished eighth at the UC-San Diego Triton Invitational on Feb. 12. The Hoosiers dropped a pair of matches on the second day of the event. After dropping the first contest of the day, 9-3, to host No. 17 UC-San Diego, Indiana fell to No. 15 UC-Davis, 6-2. The Hoosiers fell to 2-6 on the year with all six defeats coming at the hands of ranked opponents.
"We were one quarter away from playing for at worst third place," Indiana head coach Barry King said. "I thought we played a lot better against UC-Davis in the second game on Sunday, especially in the fourth period. We created a lot of opportunities offensively, but we just struggled to finish and find the back of the net. There are positives that we can take out of this weekend."
In the seven-place game against UC-Davis, the Hoosiers trailed early when the Aggies scored with the six-on-five advantage less than 30 seconds into the match. IU drew even with a six-on-five goal of its own from senior Janis Pardy. With the shot clock running down, Pardy drew the ejection in the post. The kickout set up a two-on-one advantage for the Hoosiers. Sophomore Brittany Estrada fed the ball back to Pardy, who scored into the left side of the net with 3:56 remaining. It was her team-leading 11th goal on the season.
The Aggies took a one-goal lead into the second period thanks to a goal from the two-meter at the 2:46 mark of the first period. In the second period, UC-Davis scored both goals, including the final one with a six-on-four advantage and led 4-1 at the half.
UC-Davis extended its lead to 6-1 in the third period with a pair of six-on-five goals. The Hoosiers had their chances in the final period with a pair of six-on-five advantages and a four-meter penalty. IU also hit the post on numerous occasions over the final seven minutes, but could only muster a Linda Calvert goal with 3:10 left. On the play, junior Brooke Zimmerman drew the ejection, before Pardy found Calvert on the weak side for the goal.
Junior Kristin Zernicke finished with a team-leading three steals to go along with two kickouts earned. Zimmerman had a team-high three kickouts earned. Sophomore goalkeeper Jackie Pyrz finished with four saves in net for IU.
In the opening contest of the day against UC-San Diego, the Tritons and Hoosiers traded goals over the opening three possessions of the contest. After a goal 20 seconds into the match by UCSD, the Hoosiers received a six-on-five tally from senior Katie Parrish. Pardy hit Parrish with a pass from left to right, and the Santa Barbara, Calif., native scored just inside the post. The Tritons responded with a six-on-five goal of their own less than 30 seconds later to retake the lead.
A lob shot goal on the counter extended the UCSD lead to 3-1, before Zimmerman scored with 45 seconds left in the opening period to draw within one. Zimmerman drew the kickout in transition, and then after receiving a pass from Estrada, stepped into open space and scored into the right side of the net. It was her fourth goal of the season.
UC-San Diego struck back before the end of the period with a lob shot from the right side with 20 seconds left in the opening stanza. The goal started a run of six unanswered Triton goals. UCSD scored one marker in the second period and one in the third via the six-on-five advantage.
The Tritons tacked on the opening three goals of the final period, before Parrish notched her second goal of the game with IU on the man-advantage. With 33 seconds remaining in the fourth period, junior Claire Nicholson found Parrish, who notched her second multi-goal game of the season.
Junior Jaclyn Tameris, Zernicke, Zimmerman and Pyrz each finished with two steals against the Tritons. Pyrz also had six saves in the cage for the Hoosiers. Estrada led IU with three ejections drawn in the contest.
The Hoosiers return to action at the Princeton Invitational, Feb. 17-19. Indiana will open with Bucknell at 7:15 p.m., on Friday, Feb. 17. IU will face Brown at 2:15 p.m., before battling No. 18 Princeton at 7:30 p.m., on Saturday, Feb. 18. The Hoosiers will cap the Princeton Invite against Harvard on Sunday, Feb. 19, at 1:20 p.m.
