Transfers Fitting In, Hope to Play Key Role

Even before the start of his first season at the helm of the Indiana baseball program, head coach Tracy Smith is proving to be a draw. Redshirt freshman infielder Brett Sager and sophomore infielder Tad Reida joined the Hoosiers at the start of the spring semester after transferring from LSU and Wichita State, respectively. Each cited Smith's reputation and a chance to contribute as reasons for coming to Indiana.
"I have a chance to play a key role on the team," Sager said. "Coach Smith is a great coach with a winning background. He's known as a hard-working coach and a guy I want to play for. I think this program is a good fit for me."
Smith and Reida have a history, dating back to Reida's playing days at Western High School in Kokomo, Ind.
"Coach Smith recruited me when he was at Miami, and I've only heard great things since then," Reida said. "Since I've been here, he's been great. He's a great players coach."
However, baseball was not the only draw for Reida and Sager. Indiana had other things to offer that factored into their decision to transfer.
"I like the academics here," Sager said. "I'm a business major, so I'm looking forward to getting into the Kelley School of Business and making a home here."
For Reida, being back in Indiana lets him see more of his family.
"It's great. I was able to go home and see my parents and my brother for the first time in a long time," Reida said. "My sister is over at Indiana State playing basketball, so I can go and watch her play. I haven't been able to see her play since she went to college. It's nice to be around the family a little bit more."
As transfer students, Reida and Sager faced a difficult transition. However, Sager says the coaching and academic staffs have been helpful with the change, which has allowed him to focus on getting ready for the season.
"My advisor has been great. She helps me set up tutors if I need them," Sager said. "Coach Smith has been there for me for anything I need, academically or athletically. Everyone has been real helpful."
Reida, who hit .279 in 52 games for the Shockers last season, and Sager are both in the infield mix. Coach Smith has praised Sager and Reida for their potential and style of play. However, with the 2006 season rapidly approaching, the transfers remain focused on team goals.
"For myself, I just want to go out and work hard every day. I want to try to get good things out of it," Sager said. "For the team, I think we can win the Big Ten and get to a regional."
Reida's expectations are no different.
"I just want to go out and compete hard every day," Reida said. "I want to win the Big Ten championship and make a regional. I don't see why we can't do any of those things. Coaches are willing to stay after practice and work with players. Players come in and get their own work done. It's a great team atmosphere."
