BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana men's track and field athlete Stephen Haas earned the Big Ten's Athlete of the Week honor as announced by the conference on Feb. 14 for his NCAA automatic qualifying time in the men's 5,000m at Feb. 11's Tyson Invitational.
Against some of the nation's top competition at the Tyson Invite, Haas crossed the line in the 5,000m's fourth-best time of 13:44.09. So far this season, Haas' time is a season best. The Huntersville, N.C., product's time was nearly six second faster than the automatic qualifying time of 13:50.00. Haas, the current IU-record holder in the event, is the first Hoosier to meet an automatic qualifying mark this year.
The award is Haas' first-career weekly accolade as he joins teammate David Neville, who was honored on Jan. 10.
