BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana women's tennis senior captain Sarah Batty earned Big Ten Athlete of the Week honors as announced by the conference office on Feb. 15.
"Sarah is very deserving of this award," Indiana head coach Lin Loring said. "She is working really hard right now and playing well. Sarah has been one of the top players in the Big Ten for several years now."
Batty claimed a total of six wins last weekend against Marquette, DePaul and Butler. At No. 1 singles, the nation's No. 98 player improved her record to 6-2 with victories over Marquette's Lauren Little, 6-3, 6-4, DePaul's No. 85 Gergana Ganeva, 6-4, 6-7, 1-0(6) and Butler's Alaina Griffin, 6-1, 7-5. In doubles, the Chesterfield, England product and partner junior Laura McGaffigan defeated Butler's Little and Maria Calbeto, 8-2, DePaul's Gergana and Dunja Antunovic, 8-1, and Butler's Griffin and Tayo Baily, 8-3, to improve the Hoosier pair's doubles record to 7-1 this season.
Batty's win over No. 85 Ganeva was her first win over a ranked opponent this season and the first of her career in the No. 1 position.
This is the Hoosiers first weekly conference honor of the season and the second of Batty's career. Batty earned the league's weekly honor for the week of April 25-29, 2005 for her play against Big Ten foes Michigan and Michigan State.
Batty and the Hoosiers travel to Winston-Salem, N.C., to face No. 21 Wake Forest on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 11 a.m., followed by a match against UNC-Greensboro on Sunday, Feb. 19 at 10 a.m.
