Hoosiers Fall to Kent State, 1-0

TAMPA, Fla. - The Indiana softball team fell to Kent State, 1-0, on Feb. 24 at the Louisville Slugger Tournament at the USF Softball Field in Tampa, Fla. The Hoosiers claimed six hits in the loss, but could not overcome a first-inning run by the Golden Flashes.
With the loss, Indiana fell to 1-1 at the tournament and 1-2-1 on the season, while Kent State improved to 2-3 overall and 2-0 on the day.
Senior pitcher Megan Roark tossed six strikeouts and allowed only six hits in the effort, while freshman shortstop Stephanie Pellerito went 2-for-3 at the plate to pace all Hoosier bats.
In a close matchup, the Hoosiers threatened to cross home plate in the fourth and seventh innings with runners at third and second, respectively. However, solid defense by Kent State prevailed and held the Hoosiers without a score.
Kent State scored first in the opening frame to lead the ballgame 1-0. Indiana continued to threaten throughout the contest, but left eight on base during the game and failed to capitalize off its scoring chances.
Despite a late-game run in the top of the seventh, the Hoosiers were unable to capitalize off two hits in the final frame.
Indiana returns to the diamond on Saturday, Feb. 25, against Siena at 10:30 a.m. (EST) at the USF Softball field. Bracket play begins at 4 p.m. with the #1 vs. #4 seed matchup, followed y the #2 and #3 seeds squaring off at 6:30 p.m.
