RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico - For each women's golf tournament during the 2006 spring campaign, IUHOOSIERS.com will have an Indiana women's golfer who will keep a player diary for the fans enjoyment. Below are the first several days of the 2006 Lady Puerto Rico Classic as written by freshman golfer Amber Lindgren:
Wednesday February 22nd
We left at noon for Puerto Rico. Our plane ride started in Indianapolis, with a lay over in Miami, and finally to sunny San Juan, Puerto Rico. We strategically packed our SUV and squeezed seven people in. We navigated our way through the city in a long hour quest to our hotel. We had good directions, the only problem was, everything was in Spanish! We also found it interesting that no one was stopping at red lights. We later found out that after midnight you could run them. We finally arrived at our Hotel, the Rio Mar Westin Resort, to get some rest before our practice round in the morning.
Thursday February 23rd
Thursday we woke up to beautiful sunny 80-degree weather. We had breakfast then hit the links for our practice round. We had the honor of playing our practice round with a former Indiana University Player, Elena Larrazabel (1981-83). We had a lot of fun with her and learned a lot during the practice round. After the round we had lunch at the course and practiced some more before traveling back to the hotel. Once at the hotel many of us went to the ocean to enjoy the Puerto Rican water. We later went to dinner at the Brass Cactus. Before going to bed, we had a team meeting, discussing our strategies and we took one more look at the holes to prepare ourselves for tomorrow. We then fell asleep thinking of birdies and pars.
Friday February 24th
Friday was the first round of the Lady Puerto Rico Classic. We had breakfast at the golf course and warmed up for about an hour before going out to our holes for the 8 am shotgun start. Today played tough with the wind and pin placements. Shannon played really well and led us. We all hung in there and fought through the round. Even though we didn't play as well in this first round as we hoped, we learned a lot and found ways to prove upon our round tomorrow. After the round we had lunch at the golf course, and stuck around to work on our games some more. We all piled into our SUV and headed back to the resort. We later on ate at the pool at our resort with the Wisconsin team, and went to bed for tomorrow's round.
Saturday February 25th
Today we woke up to sunny, warm, windy Puerto Rico weather. We had breakfast at the course, warmed up and then headed out to our holes at 7:30 to tee off. Again today the conditions and pin placements were not too favorable to shoot real low, but we all hung in there and fought through it. After our round we enjoyed a nice lunch at the course, practiced and went to the beach. For dinner we went to the Metropole, and had authentic Cuban food and ice-cream. We finished up our day with an inspirational team meeting and hit the beds.
