Mariano, Swander Named IU Co-Athletes of the Week

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - On a weekly basis, IUHOOSIERS.com will recognize the top performances in Hoosier Athletics by selecting an IU Athlete of the Week. For the week ending Feb. 26, senior diver Brian Mariano and senior swimmer Kevin Swander each earned the honor after helping the men's swimming and diving team to its 24th Big Ten title in school history.
Mariano garnered Big Ten Diver of the Championships and Big Ten Co-Diver of the Year accolades after an amazing run at the conference meet. He captured the platform title on his final dive, while his 391.85-point total stands as the sixth-best six-dive platform total in school history. Additionally, he competed in the championship final in each of the three diving events at Big Tens.
Meanwhile, Swander claimed Big Ten Swimmer of the Championships for the second time in his career. He snared the 100-yard breaststroke title with the fastest time in the nation. Additionally, Swander swam on the conference, school and pool-record 200-yard medley relay team that won the conference crown.

Mariano and Swander earned the IU Athlete of the Week honor from a list of deserving student-athletes. The list of nominees included: Senior Mariangee Bogado (softball), freshman Jorge Campillo (men's golf), junior Laura McGaffigan (women's tennis), junior David Neville (men's track and field), senior Marshall Strickland (men's basketball) and sophomore David Trager (baseball).
Hoosier Honor Roll
Senior Mariangee Bogado (softball):
Turned in a record-setting performance against the University of South Florida in the opening game of the Louisville Slugger Tournament. Bogado dominated USF batter, a team who has been a perennial regional squad since 2003, fanning a school-record 23 batters over 10 innings of action. The feat replaced a previous best by 1986 All-American Amy Unterbrink, who tallied 19 against Texas on March 17, 1986. Bugaboo's mark brought the senior to 46 punchouts on the season in just three appearances and over 26 innings of action to average 1.6 strikeouts per frame. Bogado is third on the team in batting average with a .391 average on nine hits, five runs and two RBI in the young season.
Freshman Jorge Campillo (men's golf):
Freshman Jorge Campillo finished second and let the Hoosiers to a second-place showing at the Club de Golf Santa Anita/North Texas Classic. Campillo closed the tournament with a sterling 4-under-par 68, matching his best round of the season (round two at the Wolverine Intercollegiate, Sept. 24-25), and ended the tournament at 5-under 211. The freshman bounced back from an opening 74 with a 69 and his phenomenal final-round tally. Campillo is the first Hoosier freshman to register a top-five finish since Santiago Quirarte placed fourth at the 2005 Pioneer Classic (March 15-16). The Caceres, Spain native also grabbed the best finish for a freshman since current PGA Tour member Jeff Overton (2002-05) tied for second at the 2002 FirstEnergy Intercollegiate (April 20-21). Campillo appeared to have medalist honors in hand only to be thwarted by Houston's Pablo Acuan, who birdied five of his final six holes to not only defeat Campillo by one stroke but to lift the Cougars to the team championship. Campillo leads the Hoosiers with a 72.44 scoring average and has played in all six of the team's events this season.
Junior Laura McGaffigan (women's tennis):
McGaffigan led the Hoosiers to a 5-2 upset over No. 28 Tennessee on Saturday, Feb. 25 by clinching the match point in the No. 2 singles position to give Indiana its first victory over a higher-ranked opponent this season. In a heated match at No.1 doubles, senior Sarah Batty and McGaffigan clinched the doubles point for Indiana with an 8-4 win over Tennessee's Melissa Schaub and Ghizela Schutte. Despite a late-match surge from the Lady Vols, it was not enough as Batty and McGaffigan nabbed their 10th doubles win in the No. 1 slot. McGaffigan at No. 2 singles earned the Hoosiers' fourth point and the win with a 7-5, 6-0 win over Griffith. McGaffigan, who trailed slightly in the first set, fought hard to pull out the win in the first set before blanking Griffith in the second. McGaffigan is now 8-3 in singles play this season.
Junior David Neville (men's track and field):
Neville became the Big Ten's 400m champion, an event in which he previously earned a NCAA provisional qualifying mark, with a first-place time of 47.11. The defending champion in the 200m, Neville held onto his title by claiming the 200m crown with a first-place time of 21.21.
Senior Marshall Strickland (men's basketball):
Senior guard Marshall Strickland led the Hoosiers to a 2-0 mark over the last week, including a Senior Day upset of No. 18/16 Michigan State at Assembly Hall. Against Penn State on Feb. 22, Strickland became the 40th Hoosier to scored 1,000 points in his career. He notched 22 points in the 69-65 victory over the Nittany Lions. Strickland accounted for a career-high seven three-point field goals against Penn State. The seven trifectas tied for the sixth-best single-game mark in school history. The school record for three-point field goals in a game is eight set by five different players and most recently, sophomore guard/forward Robert Vaden, who accomplished the feat at Iowa on Jan. 24. Strickland also attempted 11 treys against PSU, which ranks 13th on the single-game record list.
Sophomore David Trager (baseball):
Making his first two career appearances, Trager limited a potent Charlotte offense averaging nearly 10 runs per contest to one earned run in 6 2/3 innings. The right-handed reliever held the 49ers to five hits and collected four strikeouts. In his debut in the opener, Trager did not allow an earned run in two innings and surrendered one hit, no walks and two strikeouts. The Prospect, Ky., product bounced back to pitch two days later in the final game of the series and went 4 2/3 innings, the longest outing for a Hoosier pitcher during the weekend. He held a Charlotte team that scored 11 runs in the contest to one earned run on four hits with two punchouts.
